Phase: escalating

The air in the ancient tower grew heavy, thick with an old magic that tasted of decay and hunger. The ground floor rumbled ominously as the runes pulsed with fresh dark energy—each beat a slow thud against the stone. Jeane called up from her hidden pit, voice strained but steady: "Merrin! Stay calm and quiet—whatever's down here might be drawn by sound." The walls around them seemed to close in, unstable in the flickering torchlight.
Halie stepped forward carefully, her heavy mace held ready. The floor wasn't safe—the magic felt wrong here, heavy with old death. "Stay back," she warned the others, her voice tight but steady. "The floor isn't safe." She reached for her holy symbol, fingers closing around the cool metal. Varrika secured her position at the entrance, crossbow aimed into the shadows beyond their sight.
Merrin scrambled to light a torch, the flickering flames casting eerie shadows across the pit walls. She peered over the edge, trying to catch a glimpse of Jeane below. "Jeane?" she called out, her voice echoing in the darkness. "Are you alright?" Her heart pounded as she scanned the pit's walls for any sign of movement or hidden exits. The last thing they needed was for their sorcerer to be trapped down there with whatever might...
Seraphine stood at the base of the tower, the air growing thick with a chill that seemed to emanate from the very stones themselves. A heavy, oppressive silence hung in the shadowed chamber, broken only by the occasional skitter of small creatures in the darkness above. Varrika's tension was palpable behind her, her crossbow string creaking slightly as she stood guard at the entrance. The wizard drew a deep breath, her sharp eyes scanning the ancient runes that pulsed with dark energy.
Jeane fell into blackness that swallowed everything but the sudden echo of her own voice. This is what they called 'unplanned.' The floor above groaned as if waking from long sleep. Something shifted below her, scraping against stone. Fine. Let them come. She drew on her magic, preparing to defend herself in the darkness.
The runes pulsed again, slower this time—some dark magic's heartbeat thudding in the stone. Halie's voice called down, steady and reassuring: "Jeane? Talk to me." The cleric stood ready at the edge of the pit, her mace held firmly in both hands.
Merrin shook her head, torchlight flickering across her worried face. "I don't see any way out from here," she whispered back. "The walls are solid stone—no hidden panels or cracks." She glanced nervously at the ceiling above. "And I don't like how quiet it is up here."
Seraphine moved forward carefully, her elegant robes whispering against stone as she approached the pit's edge. "Jeane?" she called down softly. "Can you see anything below? Any movement or... signs of what might have taken you down there?"
The tower seemed to hold its breath around them, ancient stone groaning under the weight of dark magic and long-slumbering malice.
