Round 33 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika secures her position, the air grows heavier with dread. The glowing runes on the walls pulse ominously, casting an eerie light on the darkened floor. She calls out to the companions, "Light those torches and mark the floor! We need to secure our position before we do anything else." Halie, her voice trembling, begins to recite a prayer, seeking divine intervention. As the companions light the torches, the shadows cast on the walls seem to writhe like living things. Merrin, ever vigilant, notices that the pit's walls appear to be shifting, as if they're trying to close in on Jeane. The sound of small claws or clicking bone sounds grows louder, and the runes above pulse with each heartbeat. Suddenly, a section of the floor beneath Jeane's hiding place creaks ominously, revealing a narrow, winding staircase that descends into darkness. A chill runs through the party as they realize this might be their only hope to reach their trapped companion. Immediate Pressure: Do the companions proceed down the staircase, risking further undead encounters or unforeseen dangers?
Halie steps forward carefully, her heavy mace held ready. The air in this place feels wrong—heavy with old magic and death. "Stay back," she warns the others, her voice tight but steady. "The floor isn't safe. Jeane, can you hear me?"
Her eyes scan the pulsing runes on the walls, each pulse sending a fresh wave of dread through her. This tower... it's not just abandoned. It’s waiting. She reaches for her holy symbol, fingers closing around the cool metal. "Varrika, light those torches and mark the floor. We need to see what we're dealing with before we take another step."
She lowers her voice. "Seraphine, I don't think this is a simple trap. The magic here... it's ancient and hungry." She turns back to the dark pit where Jeane fell. "Jeane? Talk to me. What do you see down there?"
I watch Varrika's hands tense around her crossbow, the muscles in her arms coiled like springs ready to release. Her eyes are fixed on the darkness beyond the edge of our small circle of light, where the shadows seem to writhe with an unnatural life of their own. The runes pulse in time with my own frantic heartbeat, casting eerie flashes across her face, highlighting the grim set of her jaw.
"I have a theory about what we're seeing here," I say, my voice so low it's almost lost in the air, yet still loud enough for Halie to hear me over the oppressive silence. "These runes... they aren't just decoration. They're feeding something."
My gaze drifts from Varrika to the pulsing stonework and then down into the depths of Jeane's pit. The sound of small claws or clicking bone sounds echoes up from below, raising the fine hairs on my arms. It's a chilling reminder of what we're truly facing in this accursed place.
"Dark magic," *I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else. "A foul power source is being tapped into, and it's affecting everything around us."
The pulsing runes cast an eerie glow across the chamber, their ominous light dancing on the stone walls. I can feel the tension in the air, like the very stones are alive with malice. My fingers tighten around my crossbow as I scan the shadows for any sign of movement. "Halie," I call out, keeping my voice low. "Your prayers might be our only hope here. Seraphine, keep that mace ready. We don't know what this place is hiding."
I take a step forward, my boots echoing in the silence. The floor feels solid beneath my feet, but I remember Halie's warning. One wrong move could send us tumbling into whatever lies below. "Jeane?" I call down into the pit, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "Can you hear me? Are you alright?"
I hear Jeane's voice echoing up from the pit, strained and urgent. My heart hammers as I fumble for my tinderbox, desperate to see what's down there. The walls seem to close in, unstable in the flickering torchlight. I have to find a way to reach her without drawing the attention of those skeletons above.
I call out into the darkness below me. 'Merrin! Stay calm and quiet—whatever's down here might be drawn by sound.' The walls pulse with each heartbeat, the runes above growing brighter, more insistent. I test the floor around the edge of my trap with my mace handle; it feels solid again. Whatever mechanism caught me has reset. I need to find a way out before these wards fully activate or whatever's making those clicking sounds below decides to investigate. The darkness presses in, thick and cold. Merrin: Are you alright down there? We'll get you out! I hear her voice tremble. 'I'm fine,' I lie. 'Just trapped with... nothing important.' Something skitters across stone far below. Not stone. Bone. I swallow hard. 'How's it look up there?'
