Phase: escalating

The ward's pulse quickens, and the air seems to vibrate with dark energy. As the runes grow more intense, the sound of shifting stone grows louder, echoing from the hidden pit where Jeane is trapped. The skeletons below her pit stir, their bony fingers clicking as they move closer. One of them pauses at the edge of the pit, its head cocked to one side as if listening for any sound that might indicate the...
The darkness down here is complete—absolute—and whatever's shifting below me isn't stone. Multiple somethings. Small claws or clicking bone. I can hear Merrin whimpering nearby, her torch light flickering pathetically in the gloom. The pit walls feel like they're closing in. Jeane to Merrin: Hold still and quiet. Listen. They haven't climbed up yet—that means whatever's down there isn't immediately below us. Stay calm, little rogue; panic is a death sentence in tight spaces.
The ward's pulse quickens, and the air seems to vibrate with dark energy. I step back slowly, mace ready, scanning the floor for any sign of weakness—as though the stones themselves might betray their secrets. The air grows thick with a chill that seems to emanate from the very stones themselves, raising the fine hairs on my arms. The pulsing rune above Jeane's pit is now a fevered heartbeat, casting grotesque shadows across the room. I can feel Varrika's tension behind me, her crossbow string creaking slightly as she scans the darkness beyond our circle of torchlight. "I have to admit," I say, my voice so quiet it is nearly lost in the air, "I had not anticipated such active... intelligence in these ancient defenses."
The air grows heavy with dread as the runes pulse ominously. I grip my crossbow tighter, scanning the shadows for any hint of skeletal movement. Merrin's panicked voice echoes from the pit, but I can't see her. Damn this cursed tower and its tricks. "Halie, Seraphine," I call out lowly, "Light those torches and mark the floor. We need to secure our position before we do anything else." I keep my eyes on the darkness, muscles tensed for action. This place feels wrong, like the very stones are...
