Round 26 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The air thickens as Jeane slides down the winding staircase, her torch casting eerie shadows on the walls. She lands with a thud on a narrow, damp floor, her crossbow at the ready. The sound of rushing water grows louder, and the ground beneath her feet seems to vibrate with dark energy. Merrin's faint cries echo from somewhere above, and Jeane's grip on her crossbow tightens. She calls out to Varrika, "I'm down! I see a narrow staircase leading up to the pit. It looks like it hasn't been used in ages."
The pulsing runes on the walls seem to be responding to her presence, casting an otherworldly glow over the chamber. The air reeks of decay and something far more sinister. Varrika's voice crackles over the comms, "Be careful, Jeane. I've got the entrance secured, but I'm not sure how long I can hold off those skeletons."
With a deep breath, Jeane begins to ascend the staircase, her heart pounding in her chest. As she climbs, the runes on the walls seem to be shifting, rearranging themselves into a pattern that seems to spell out a warning: "Turn back now."
I descend the spiral staircase carefully, each stone step groaning under my weight. The air grows heavier with each descent—cold and thick with decay. Merrin's torchlight flickers above, casting distorted shadows on ancient walls slick with moisture. The runes here pulse slower than those upstairs, almost lazy in their malevolence. Varrika's voice crackles over the comms: 'Jeane, I've got movement at the entrance—three skeletons so far. They're not rushing but they're definitely interested.'
I respond without breaking stride downward: 'Hold them off. Let them know approaching this place has consequences.' The crossbow feels inadequate against whatever fresh horror is being renewed down here. Seraphine's voice follows: 'Jeane, those runes—can you tell if they're part of a ward or a trap? They seem... responsive.'
I pause at the bottom of the stairs to scan the narrow chamber. 'Responsive is an understatement.' The symbols actually dim as I look away and brighten when my gaze returns. 'They're aware. And they don't like me being here any more than I like it.' A sound echoes from below—a skittering, like claws on stone. 'Merrin, are you okay? What do you see down there?'
Her voice comes back shaky but clear: 'I'm okay for now—torch is still good, and I haven't seen anything moving except... the walls themselves seem to breathe.'
The walls do seem to pulse, almost like lungs. I make a note not to touch them. 'Stay where you are,' I instruct. 'We're mapping this floor first before we attempt any rescue.' I mark the runes with my wand—carefully, using a small arcane light rather than touching the stone itself—and the symbols glow brighter in response. Not hostile yet, but certainly not friendly. The staircase above me creaks under Seraphine's weight as she descends. 'Jeane, if this is a ward, there might be a keystone—some central point that controls it all. If we can find and disrupt it...'
'We might survive,' I finish grimly. 'Good thinking.' I adjust my grip on the crossbow. The skittering sound below grows louder. I raise my voice toward the pit: 'Merrin, any changes? More movement?'
I peer over the edge of the pit, my heart hammering against my ribs as I take in the dizzying depths. Merrin's muffled voice echoes up from the darkness, a frantic whisper carried on the stale air. The runes carved into the stone walls here are different—fresher, their glow pulsing with an unsettling rhythm that seems to match my own frantic heartbeat. Whatever is happening down there, I think, my fingers tracing the intricate patterns of one particularly vivid rune, it feels... alive.
"Jeane," I call out, my voice a low murmur that barely rises above the sound of Merrin's distress. "We need to be cautious. This isn't just old magic left over. Something is feeding into it."
I can feel Varrika’s presence at the top of the stairs, a solid anchor in the chaos, but even her strength feels tenuous against this malevolent energy. The air here tastes wrong—sour and heavy with decay and something else, something I can’t quite place but that makes my stomach churn. We can't rush in, I think, my gaze fixed on the glowing runes. We need to understand what we’re dealing with first.
I stand firm at the tower entrance, crossbow loaded and ready. The air reeks of decay and something far worse. I can feel it in my bones—the dark magic is alive down there. Pulsing. Hungry.

"Listen up," I growl into the comms. "Whatever's renewing those runes... it ain't natural. Stay sharp down there, watch each other's backs. If anything feels off... you get out, you hear me?"

Jeane and Halie nod grimly before disappearing down the pit. I turn my attention to the skeletal horrors lurking in the shadows.

"You lot," I mutter, leveling my crossbow at a particularly decrepit looking skeleton. "Best not try anything funny. I've got a score to settle."

The skeletons shift uneasily, their bony fingers tightening on rusted weapons. But they do not advance. Not yet.

I keep my eyes peeled for any movement as I wait for word from below. The silence is deafening. But it's better than the alternative.

Whatever fresh horrors lurk in the shadows, I'll be ready. For Merrin. For the party. And for whatever dark magic this tower has in store.
