Round 24 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin's voice echoes through the darkness, her words laced with desperation. "I'm down here! Please, you have to find me!" The air around Jeane seems to thicken as she carefully descends toward Merrin's location, her torch casting eerie shadows on the walls. As Jeane reaches the bottom of the pit, she finds herself in a narrow chamber lined with pulsing green runes. The runes seem to be feeding into a hidden chamber, and the air is heavy with the stench of decay. Jeane can feel the weight of the tower's dark magic bearing down upon her. Suddenly, the ground gives way beneath her feet, and Jeane finds herself sliding down a steep, winding staircase into darkness. The sound of rushing water grows louder, and she realizes that the staircase leads to a hidden underground river, its waters swirling with an otherworldly energy.
"Helloooo? Anyone out there?" Merrin's voice echoes up from the pit, wavering but hopeful. She fumbles for the tinderbox, fingers trembling against the flint. "I'm down here! Please, you have to find me!"
The tiny spark takes hold and she lifts the torch, its meager light revealing crumbling stone walls slick with moisture. Runes pulse an eerie green along the edges of the pit. Merrin's eyes dart from one side to the other, searching for any sign of a way out. "Careful now," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "Don't want to go startling any...guests." The word catches in her throat as a skittering sound echoes from somewhere in the darkness below. Keeping her back pressed against the wall, Merrin nocks an arrow into her crossbow, ready to loose at the first sign of movement. The weapon feels heavy and clumsy in her hands, but it's better than nothing. She takes a deep breath, trying to calm the pounding of her heart. "Right then," she whispers, "let's see what we've got here." Slowly, carefully, Merrin begins to feel her way along the edge of the pit, one hand tracing the runes while the other keeps the crossbow trained on the shadows.
I descend carefully toward Merrin's voice, crossbow ready. The runes here are feeding dark energy downward—someone is actively renewing the horror piece by piece in this tower, and I want to know who or what before we stumble into its trap. Varrika, hold that entrance secure no matter what you hear down here. Halie and Seraphine with me—stay tight. The air tastes wrong as we descend deeper. This isn't just old magic left over; it's being pumped fresh by something inside the tower now. Merrin, can you hear us? We're almost there. Seraphine, keep that staff ready for any dark magic counterspells. Halie, your senses are sharper than ours—any undead stirring nearby? I'm not rushing into this pit blind just because Merrin's scared. If we move smart and map the patterns first, we might avoid whatever's renewing these skeletons entirely.
The pulsing runes feel wrong—fresh dark magic layered over ancient wards. We're walking into a trapster's lair here. Varrika, hold the entrance secure no matter what you hear down here. Seraphine, Halie follows close, every sense straining against the wrongness of this place. I feel it, sharp and cold. This isn't just old magic left over. Something's feeding dark energy into this place—fresh magic layered over ancient defenses. We proceed carefully.
I peer cautiously over the edge of the pit, my staff’s runes glowing faintly in the eerie green light reflecting off its walls. The air down here is thick and heavy, carrying an ancient, unsettling power. I can feel it prickling against my skin like static electricity.
"The runes... they're active. And not just old magic left over from when this tower was first built."
My voice is a strained whisper, meant only for Jeane and Halie. Varrika's solid presence at the top of the pit is a small comfort, but Merrin's frantic calls from somewhere below are a stark reminder of our dire situation.
"I don't know if it's safe to descend without knowing what we're walking into," I say, my fingers tightening on my staff. "Whatever's renewing this horror piece by piece down here... it could be dangerous. We need to proceed carefully."
I gesture towards the pulsing runes, their glow casting strange, shifting patterns across our faces.
"This isn't just ancient decay. It's fresh magic being layered on top of it. And that means there’s likely some kind of source feeding it all."
My gaze drops to the darkness below, where Merrin's voice echoes again. The sound sends a shiver through me, a mix of fear for my friend and an unsettling curiosity about what lies in wait for us down there.
"Whatever we find, I have a feeling our quest just got a lot more complicated than retrieving some old sword."
The air is thick with dread as I stand guard at the tower's entrance. Merrin's distant cries from below send shivers down my spine. I tighten my grip on the mace, senses straining against the wrongness of this place. Halie's warnings about the dark magic pulsating through these walls echo in my mind. We're walking into a trapster's lair, and I know it. But Merrin needs our help. I nod grimly at Jeane as she prepares to descend after our halfling rogue. "Stay sharp down there," I growl. "And watch each other's backs."
My eyes scan the shadows, every muscle coiled for action. The skeletons could be anywhere in this accursed tower. And whatever dark power is animating them...I've got a feeling we ain't seen the last of it. Halie places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We'll find her," she says softly. "The goddess will guide our path." I allow myself a tight smile. Having a cleric in our midst brings its own comforts. But as the sounds of Jeane and the others fade into the depths, I can't shake the unease gnawing at my gut. This tower is more than just ruins haunted by undead. Some malevolent force is at work here, breathing new life into ancient evil. I set my jaw and stand firm, a bulwark against the darkness. Whatever fresh horrors lurk in the shadows...we'll face them together or not at all. That's the only way any of us will make it out of this alive.
