Round 20

Phase: escalating

The tower's stones seemed to breathe in the darkness, pulsing with an unnatural energy that made Seraphine's skin crawl. She had seen ancient ruins before—crumbled heaps of forgotten history, harmless save for the dust they kicked up. But this place felt alive, wrong, and disturbingly recent.
Her staff glowed softly as she descended the stairs, casting long shadows that danced across the walls like macabre puppets. The runes etched into the stone here were active—she could feel the dark magic thrumming through them, fresh and potent. This wasn't ancient decay; something was actively maintaining this place.
She glanced back at Jeane following close behind, the succubus's crimson eyes scanning every shadow with predatory alertness. The woman carried a heavy mace, wings held close for better maneuverability in the tight space. Merrin had volunteered to scout ahead—clever move, using her halfling size for advantage—but even experience couldn't fully prepare one for the unknown horrors of a place like this.
The thought of her friend trapped below sent a chill through Seraphine's bones. Merrin was many things—a skilled rogue, a loyal companion, a woman with a quick wit and quicker hands. But she wasn't built for prolonged isolation or facing whatever lurked in the depths of this cursed tower alone.
Jeane moved forward cautiously, each step measured and deliberate. The air grew thicker with the stench of decay and old blood as they descended toward the hidden chamber below. She could hear Merrin's voice echoing up from the darkness—a stream of muttered curses punctuated by the scrape of stone on stone.
"Merrin!" she called out, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Talk to me—what can you see down there?"
There was a moment of silence before Merrin's reply came, strained and tense. "I'm in some kind of basement chamber. Stone walls, stone floor, stone ceiling—I'm beginning to think the entire damn tower is just one big rock collection. But hey, at least I didn't land on any spikes or get impaled by rusty iron rods. Small blessings."
Jeane felt a flicker of relief at Merrin's sarcasm—at least she was still talking and hadn't been immediately attacked. "Any signs of movement? Skeletons? Ghosts? Creepy undead butlers offering us tea?"
"Funny," Merrin replied, her voice tight with barely contained fear. "I'll let you know if I spot any. Though given the state of this place, I wouldn't be surprised if the tea service shows up first. Now shut up and let me focus—if something tries to kill me, I'd rather not miss it because someone's yapping in my ear."
Jeane fell silent, pressing her back against the wall as they descended the narrow staircase. The air grew colder with each step, and she could feel the magic pulsing stronger now—fresh, alive, and utterly malevolent.
Seraphine moved beside her, staff held ready, eyes scanning every shadow. "These wards... they're not defensive," she murmured again, more to herself this time. "They're feeding. Something down there is being sustained by this dark magic."
Jeane's grip tightened on her mace. "Great. So not only do we have to rescue Merrin from a potentially trap-filled basement, but we also get to deal with whatever undead horror is using the place as an all-you-can-eat buffet. This keeps getting better and better."
They reached the bottom of the stairs, the chamber opening up before them—a cavernous space filled with shadows and the faint glimmer of... something unnatural. Jeane's wings bristled instinctively, a low growl rumbling in her chest.
"Merrin," she called out softly, "we're here. Stay still—don't move unless absolutely necessary."
The reply came after a moment, barely audible. "Understood. And for the love of all that is holy, try not to set off any more traps on your way down. I'd rather not have to catch you both."
