Merrin's cautious exploration of the hidden chamber is met with an unsettling silence. She freezes, her crossbow trained on the shadows, as the air seems to thicken with anticipation. Suddenly, a faint scratching noise echoes through the chamber, growing louder by the second. As Merrin readies herself for a potential ambush, a section of the ancient runes on the walls begins to glow with an eerie, pulsing light. The runes' glow intensifies, casting flickering shadows across the room, and the air is filled with the acrid scent of ozone. The scratching noise ceases, replaced by an oppressive stillness. A narrow, winding staircase appears at the far end of the chamber, leading down into darkness. The staircase seems to be calling to Merrin, but she's unsure if it's a safe route or a trap. The runes' glow begins to pulse in time with her own racing heart, as if urging her forward.

I feel it too—the fresh magic layered over the rot. Whatever's feeding these skeletons isn't ancient power leaking out; something's actively tending this graveyard. This is a calculated defense. We can't just wade in blind. Merrin, if you hear me, stay put and don't touch anything that glows or moves on its own. Varrika, Halie—we map the ground floor first, identify patrol patterns, and find whatever's serving as this thing's brain. I need to trace that magic source before we stumble into its lair. This isn't a tomb raid; it's a demon's front door with a welcome mat made of bones. We move methodically or we don't move at all.

Merrin · Rogue

I grip my crossbow tighter, eyes darting between the glowing runes on the walls and the ominous staircase that materialized before me. The air here is thick with the weight of history and an unsettling sense of dark magic. I can practically feel it crawling across my skin. "Right then," I mutter under my breath, "Time to see if this path leads to freedom or doom." I take a cautious step forward, ready to duck and roll at the first sign of danger. The stairs seem to beckon me, but in this accursed tower, nothing is as it appears. I call out, hoping my voice will carry through whatever wards block these chambers from my companions' senses. "If you lot are out there, I hope you're having better luck than I am! This hidden room is giving me the creeps."

With a deep breath, I start up the staircase, each step bringing me closer to whatever lies ahead - and further from the relative safety of my friends. The glow of the runes intensifies with each footfall, casting eerie shadows that seem to reach for me. But I press on, determined to find a way out...or at least discover what fresh horrors the tower has in store. As I climb, I can't shake the feeling that I'm being watched. Watched and judged by forces beyond my comprehension. But what choice do I have? To turn back now would be to abandon any hope of escape - and possibly doom my companions to a fate worse than death. So up I go, halfling scout turned reluctant explorer in a labyrinth of ancient magic and malevolent purpose. May the gods have mercy on my soul...because if they don't, I certainly won't survive whatever fresh hell awaits me at the top of these cursed stairs.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the cold seep into my bones as we stand at the base of the accursed tower, its ancient stones seeming to pulse with an unnatural energy. The air here is thick, heavy with the weight of history and the sour tang of dark magic. Varrika was right; this isn't just an old ruin. This is a prison wearing a crown. My gaze travels over the crumbling masonry, tracing the faint outlines of long-forgotten runes etched into the stone. They seem to shimmer at the edges of my vision, a trick of the dim light or something far more sinister. A chill runs down my spine as I consider what fresh horrors might lie within.
I adjust my grip on my staff, the worn wood smooth beneath my fingers. It's a comfort, a focus for my magic should we encounter whatever undead nightmares animate this place. My heavy pack shifts on my back, filled with supplies for our journey and the tools of my trade. The weight is a constant reminder of what we face. "Varrika was right," I murmur, my voice so low it's almost swallowed by the wind. "This isn't just an old ruin. This is a prison wearing a crown."
