Round 18 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin steps forward into the unknown, her crossbow at the ready, a chill runs down her spine. The air is thick with the weight of history and the sour tang of dark magic. She takes a deep breath, her grip on the crossbow tightening. The moment Merrin enters the corridor, a faint clicking sound echoes through the hallway, followed by the creaking of ancient wooden beams. The ward's pulse quickens, and the skeletons, previously mere statues, now twitch and lurch towards Merrin. Her companions follow close behind, their eyes fixed on the shambling undead. The tower's defenses are triggered, and a section of the floor gives way beneath Merrin's feet. She tumbles down a hidden trapdoor, her fall cushioned by a thick layer of dust and cobwebs. As she lands hard on the stone floor, she realizes the trapdoor has swung shut behind her, isolating her from her companions. Merrin finds herself in a narrow, dimly lit chamber filled with ancient runes and strange artifacts. The air reeks of decay and corruption. A faint glow emanates from the walls, casting eerie shadows on the ground. She knows she must act quickly to escape or find a way out before the skeletons reach her companions.
This isn't ancient magic failing—I feel it now clearly. Something's feeding these bones fresh power, layering new corruption over old wards. The question is what, and where we find it first.
Merrin's heart pounds as the hidden chamber closes in around her. The darkness presses close, thick with the weight of history and the sour tang of dark magic. She keeps her crossbow aimed at the shadows, fingers tight on the trigger.
Alright, you pile of dust, let's have a look at ye. She whispers to herself, her voice a hushed murmur in the enclosed space. What's a clever little halfling like me doing stuck down here? She edges forward cautiously, crossbow sweeping from side to side as she scans for any hint of movement. The air feels wrong, not just dead but actively hostile. Merrin swallows hard, trying to ignore the prickling at the back of her neck.
Halie, Seraphine, Varikka... if you lot are out there, I hope you're having better luck than I am. She mutters under her breath. Because I'd hate to be stuck down here alone with whatever's animating those skeletons.
I feel the cold seep through my boots as I stand at the threshold of this accursed tower. The air here is thick with a wrongness, a rotten stench of dark magic that chills me to the bone. Varrika's words ring in my ears—someone is feeding the wards, keeping this place alive and hungry—and I know we've stumbled into something far more perilous than mere ruins.
My heavy robes feel even heavier now, the weight of our supplies a burden I suddenly wish I could shed. Every step forward will be an effort, every turn a potential trap. But Merrin is down there, and we have to find her before whatever is animating these bones finds us first.
I take a deep breath, tasting dust and decay, and adjust my grip on my staff. It hums faintly with its own stored energy, a small comfort in this oppressive place. "Varrika was right," I murmur, my voice so low it's almost lost to the air. "This isn't just an old ruin. This is a prison wearing a crown. And we need to find out who—or what—holds the key."
I look back at Jeane, her eyes narrowed in concentration as she traces some arcane pattern with her fingers. She nods slightly, confirming my own grim assessment. "Can you feel it too? That fresh pulse layered over old decay?" My gaze then drifts to Halie, who stands with her holy symbol clutched tightly, a beacon of light in the gloom. "Halie, whatever we find down there, we'll need every bit of that goddess's favor. Keep that symbol ready. We may be fighting something far more powerful than rusted swords."
With a final, silent prayer to whatever gods might still listen in this place, I turn my attention fully forward. The passage stretches out before us, dark and unknown, promising both Merrin's rescue and the revelation of some terrible secret. "Let's move," *I say, my voice steadying with resolve. "Slowly, carefully. And stay close together. We have to be one step ahead of these... things."
I grip my mace tighter, feeling the familiar weight of its haft against my palm. The air in this accursed place is thick with the stench of decay and the oily tingle of dark magic. It presses against my skin like a shroud, heavy and suffocating. "Halie," I call out, "keep that holy symbol ready. We don't know what might come crawling out of these shadows."
My eyes scan the crumbling archways and shadowed alcoves of the tower's ground floor. The sorceress Jeane seems tense, her eyes narrowed as she probes the magical currents with her senses. The elf wizard Seraphine stands at my side, her staff gripped white-knuckled in her hands. Where's that damned halfling gotten off to? If Merrin's playing hide-and-seek in these ruins, we'll have words when I get my hands on her. But there's no time for recriminations now. The ward's pulse is growing stronger, more insistent. Whatever dark power fuels this place, it's fresh and hungry. And if the skeletons are stirring again...
I feel it too. A heartbeat layered over rot. Not ancient magic sleeping—fresh power being fed into dead bones. We need to move slow. Merrin? Answer if you hear me. [This is what I must do: maintain vigilance, keep the holy symbol ready, and try to sense any shifts in the dark energy surrounding us. But without knowing where Merrin fell through...]
