Shadow of the Ancients / Run 018 / Main Story
Round 5 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

At The base of a crumbling stone tower, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now Skeletons: Undead remnants of the tower's original defenders, now animated by dark magic to endlessly guard their ancient home.. Someone has to answer that change now.
I circle the tower's base slowly, noting the stonework. The magic here is wrong—freshly applied dark enchantments overlaying what should be ancient wards. This wasn't abandoned; it was... prepared. I gesture for Merrin to mark every skeleton movement pattern when they appear and for Seraphine to prepare an area-of-effect spell ready. The skeletons we just saw felt almost alive, which is impossible with normal necromancy—something's feeding them recent power. I need to document this configuration exactly.
I feel it before I see it—the sudden, icy chill that seems to seep right through the soles of my boots, climbing up my legs like a dark tide. The air itself crackles with an unnatural energy, a sickly green mist beginning to swirl around our feet. This is more than just decay; this is active, malicious intent.
I clutch my heavy tome of spells tighter against my chest, the leather cover cool beneath my fingers. "Varrika," I say, my voice a low murmur, "this isn't what we were expecting. The magic here... it's fresh."
My gaze darts from the ominous stone archway to Jeane, who is already crouched by the wall, her eyes wide with professional interest as she examines some arcane mark etched into the crumbling masonry. She nods, confirming my suspicion.
The skeletons emerge then, a dozen at least, their bony forms illuminated by the eerie green glow of their own corrupted magic. They move with a fluidity that belies their skeletal nature, and I catch a flash of something familiar in one of the skulls—a glint of a runic symbol, one I recognize from my studies on ancient curse crafting.
I take a step back instinctively, my heart hammering against my ribs. "We need to be careful," I warn, my voice steady despite the fear coiling in my gut. "These aren't just mindless undead. They've been... reshaped. Given purpose."
I turn to Halie, the cleric, her holy symbol already raised in one hand. "Halie, your faith may be our best defense against whatever dark power is animating them. Merrin, watch for traps."
My mind races as I try to piece together what this means. The Time-Splitting Sword isn't just trapped behind dust and rust; it's being actively guarded by something ancient and powerful, and now, newly fueled by a source we don't yet understand.*
I grip my mace tighter, feeling its familiar weight. The air here is thick with wrongness—old magic twisted into something new and hungry. I spot Halie fingering her holy symbol. "Aye, that might be our best hope against whatever's animating these bones. Merrin, stay sharp. Something's not right about their movements."
I scan the tower entrance, the runes pulsing with dark energy. I've faced undead before, but this feels different. More purposeful. "Keep your eyes peeled. They're not just mindless corpses anymore. Something's given them new life. New purpose." I take a step forward, mace at the ready. "Let's see what fresh hell they've got in store for us."
I grip my crossbow tight, scanning the shadows at the tower's base for any sign of movement. My heart pounds in my ears as I catch the scent of decay on the wind. Something's off about this place. The air itself feels... wrong. I edge closer to Halie, keeping my voice low. "Keep that holy symbol ready, priestess. We're going to need all the blessed luck we can get in there."
My eyes dart to the ancient runes on the door, fresh magic pulsing through them like a dark heartbeat. Whatever's inside this tower, it's not going to let us take the Time-Splitting Sword easy. I wet my lips, tasting dust and fear. "Alright, listen up. We stick together, watch each other's backs. And if any of those skeletons so much as look at me funny..." I pat my crossbow meaningfully. "Let's move out."
