Phase: converging

The stone groans awake under its own weight, grinding open into darkness beyond—an ancient mouth yawning wide with a sound like teeth scraping bone. Merrin stumbles back instinctively, her hand still tingling from where she'd brushed the hidden plates. Sparks had leapt at her touch, and now the runes pulse with hungry light that casts grotesque shadows across the stone face of the tower. Jeane moves forward instead, her crimson eyes scanning the shadows for threats visible only to her kind—things that might lurk just beyond the reach of mortal sight.
The air tastes wrong here, thick with decay and something else, something ancient that makes Merrin's skin crawl. She can feel it like a physical weight pressing against her chest, making each breath laborious. The magic isn't sleeping—it's feeding. "Stay close," Jeane whispers, barely audible over the echoes of their own footsteps. "This place is active. The magic isn't sleeping—it's feeding." Varrika shifts her grip on the heavy mace, muscles tensing beneath scarred skin. She positions herself between Halie and the corridor entrance, a solid wall of dwarf muscle ready to meet whatever emerges from the dark.
The gate creaks wider as Merrin works the mechanism with careful fingers, prying at ancient locks that resist modern steel. Each click and scrape seems unnaturally loud in the oppressive silence of the tower's embrace. The runes pulse faster now, their light growing brighter as if responding to her touch—hungry for more contact, more energy to devour. She pulls back quickly, rubbing her smarting palm against her leathers.
Halie steps forward then, her voice tight with apprehension. "We need to document this," she says, pulling out a small sketchbook and charcoal. "Every rune, every detail of the mechanism—we can't just rush in blindly." She moves closer to the gate but maintains a careful distance from the active runes. "The magic here is alive, starving—it's trying to taste our essence through the stone itself. We stand back, we map what we can see from a safe distance until we understand this thing fully or find another way through."
Merrin hesitates, her hand hovering over the runes as she feels their pulsing energy. She glances back at the party, noting the apprehension on their faces. "Alright, alright, I hear you," she says, a touch of defensiveness in her voice. "No more poking at things we don't understand." She steps back from the gate, her eyes still fixed on the writhing runes. "But we can't just stand here either. That thing inside is getting closer, and I don't fancy our chances if it decides to come through while we're arguing about whether or not my hand is too clumsy for delicate work."
The sound of something heavy dragging across stone echoes from within the darkness beyond the gate—slow, deliberate footsteps approaching. The runes flare brighter still, their light casting dancing shadows that seem almost alive with malice. Varrika's grip tightens on her mace, ready to meet whatever emerges from the depths. Jeane's eyes narrow, focusing on something just beyond the visible spectrum—something moving in the darkness that shouldn't be there.
Halie finishes sketching the primary rune pattern with quick, sure strokes. "I've got the basics," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "But we need more time if we're going to fully understand this thing." She looks up at Merrin, her expression showing both concern and frustration. "We can't just—" Her words are cut off as another section of the gate's surface begins to shift, more hidden mechanisms grinding awake with a sound like teeth gnashing together.
Merrin curses under her breath, taking another step back. "Right then," she says, her voice tight with barely contained excitement mixed with fear. "Change of plan. We're not mapping this bastard—we're getting through it before it decides to eat us." She glances around at the party, a mischievous smile playing at the corners of her mouth despite the obvious danger. "Anyone got any bright ideas for dealing with a sentient, hungry gate that's clearly got a taste for halfling blood?"
