Merrin's fingers brush against the pressure plates, releasing a burst of sparks as the ancient runes on the gate writhe and twist in response. The hidden traps are triggered, and the sound of grinding stone echoes through the air as the gate slowly creaks open. Beyond the gate lies a dimly lit corridor, lined with cobweb-shrouded tapestries and the skeletal remains of long-forgotten defenders. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and forgotten rituals. A chill wind stirs, carrying the faint whispers of ancient incantations that send shivers down Halie's spine. As the party steps forward, the whispers grow louder, and the ground beneath their feet begins to tremble. It becomes clear that whatever lies beyond the gate is not a simple guardian, but a force that is stirring, awakened by their presence.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air in the cramped corridor beyond the slowly creaking gate feels heavy, charged with an energy that makes my skin prickle. The ancient runes on the wall seem to writhe and twist before my eyes, pulsing with a strange, otherworldly light. A low, guttural growl rumbles through the stonework, a sound of deep, ancient hunger. I can feel it in my bones—a presence, vast and malevolent, stirring from its slumber within the tower's depths.
"The runes... they're changing," I whisper, my voice so low it is almost lost in the oppressive air. "The magic here is alive, and it's not just a simple ward. It hungers for more than mere trespassers."
My eyes dart towards Merrin, who stands frozen, her hand still resting on one of the hidden pressure plates beneath the gate. Her face is a mask of both fear and exhilaration, as if she has finally found the challenge she was seeking. But this isn't a game. The threat here is real and immediate.
"Merrin!" I hiss, my voice sharp with warning. "Get your hand off that plate right now. We don't know what else might be triggered."
I take a step closer to her, my own heart hammering against my ribs. The air grows colder, the shadows deeper. Whatever lies ahead of us is far more dangerous than we anticipated. I glance back at Halie and Varrika, their faces grim with determination but also streaked with growing unease. We came here seeking power, but now I wonder if we're about to find something far worse.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The gate groans open under its own weight, ancient stone scraping against stone like teeth grinding awake. I step forward into the gloom, my wings instinctively half-extended for balance—the only thing keeping me from stumbling as the floor tilts beneath us. Merrin's still got her hand on that plate, and I grab her wrist before she can dig herself deeper. "Enough," I say, voice low enough that it doesn't carry beyond our circle. "This isn't a lock to pick or a door to pry—it's sentient." The runes aren't just symbols anymore; they're eyes watching us, judging us, measuring how much essence we carry between us. They pulse with hunger. Seraphine's right about the growl in the stone—that's not wind, that's something breathing down here. Whatever made this place, whatever feeds it now, knows we've come knocking and wants an answer to its menu. I don't plan on being tonight's special.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's heart pounds as she stares at the ancient gate, the runes pulsing in response to her touch. The wards are alive, testing them, hungering for their essence. She feels a thrill of fear and excitement course through her. "Careful now," she murmurs, "looks like we've woken something up."
