The ground beneath Varrika's feet shifted ominously as she positioned herself between the gate and her companions. The runes pulsed with every movement, feeding power into whatever ancient horror lay beyond. She raised her mace, wings half-spread for quick response. "Stay back," she growled. "Let me handle this."
Jeane's arcane energy crackled between her palms as she prepared defensive spells. "Varrika, wait! We don't know what it is yet—could be anything from a mindless guardian to... something worse." She glanced at Merrin nervously. "And we're not sending our best climber into that mess alone."
Seraphine stepped forward, parchment clutched in her hands like a scholar about to present a breakthrough discovery. "The runes are responding to sound and movement! If we can map their patterns, we might find a safe path through!" His eyes shone with academic excitement despite the obvious danger.
Merrin grinned, drawing her dagger with a theatrical flourish. "See? I told you this thing was ancient—probably too slow to catch me." She tested the blade's edge with her thumb, clearly eager to test her skills against whatever lay ahead. "Let me get a little closer. If it tries anything, I'll dodge and you can blast it."
Jeane's voice rose in exasperation. "Have you learned nothing? That was a near miss! You nearly became its dinner!" Arcane energy crackled between her hands as she prepared to defend against any immediate threats. "Fine. But if you get yourself killed, don't expect me to resurrect you."
Varrika's voice cut through the tension, firm and unyielding. "Merrin, no. Absolutely not." Her tone allowed no argument. "We're not risking our best climber on a suicide run. We need a plan that doesn't involve feeding ourselves to whatever's under that gate."
The scholar held up his detailed diagrams, tracing a complex pattern with his finger. "It's a specific sequence—multiple pressure plates arranged in a specific order." His voice quavered with barely contained excitement. "The wrong step could trigger everything at once, but if we can map the safe path..."
Jeane moved to stand beside Varrika, her eyes fixed on the writhing runes. "Seraphine, what kind of pattern are we talking about here? Can we replicate it safely?" Her hands crackled with arcane energy, ready to unleash devastating magic at a moment's notice.
Merrin sheathed her dagger with a disappointed sigh, but her eyes still gleamed with barely contained excitement. "Fine. But someone's going to have to get close enough to test those plates." She glanced meaningfully at Jeane and Varrika. "And I'm the only one small enough to fit between them without setting everything off again."
Jeane's expression hardened. "Absolutely not. We just watched you nearly become a tentacle snack. You're not going back for seconds." She turned her attention to Seraphine, desperate for an alternative solution. "What kind of pattern are we talking about here? Can we replicate it safely?"
The scholar held up his parchment, covered in meticulous notes and diagrams. "It's complex—multiple pressure plates arranged in a specific sequence." He traced a line on the drawing with his finger. "The wrong step could trigger everything at once. But if we can map the safe path..."
Varrika interjected, her voice firm. "Enough talk. We've got a problem here, and it needs solving." She took a step forward, positioning herself between the gate and her companions. "Halie, get behind me. Jeane, keep your magic ready. Merrin... try not to poke anything else."
Merrin dusted herself off, a fierce grin spreading across her face despite the obvious danger. "Oh, come on. Where's your sense of adventure? This thing's ancient—it probably can't move that fast." She drew her dagger again, testing its edge with her thumb. "Let me get a little closer. If it tries anything, I'll dodge and you can blast it."
Jeane's eyes widened in disbelief. "Have you learned nothing? That was a near miss! You nearly became its dinner!" She raised her hands, arcane energy crackling between them as she prepared to defend against any immediate threats. "Fine. But if you get yourself killed, don't expect me to resurrect you."
Varrika sighed heavily. "Merrin, no. Absolutely not." Her voice left no room for argument. "We're not risking our best climber on a suicide run. We need a plan that doesn't involve feeding ourselves to whatever's under that gate."
Seraphine stepped forward, his eyes bright with academic excitement despite the obvious danger. "Wait! The runes—they're responding to sound and movement. If we can map their patterns, we might find a way through!" He held up his diagrams desperately.
