The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand back from the pulsing gate, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air crackles with an ancient, sentient energy that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end. "Merrin!" My voice is a strained whisper, sharp and urgent as I beckon her away from the runes. "Don't touch anything else yet."
I turn to Halie, my expression grave. The cleric looks equally unsettled, her fingers tracing the silver holy symbol at her neck. "Seraphine," she asks, her voice trembling slightly, "can you identify the spell type? Is that arcane energy or something else?"
My gaze returns to the swirling patterns on the stone, trying to make sense of what I'm seeing. It's unlike anything I've ever encountered in my studies of forbidden magics. This is no simple ward, no mere magical barrier left behind by some long-dead wizard. No, this has a life of its own, a will that seems to be watching us with predatory intent.
The sound of approaching footsteps echoes from deep within the tower, a slow, deliberate rhythm that makes my blood run cold. Whatever is coming, it knows we're here now. And I get the distinct feeling it's not expecting guests. "Jeanne," I say, turning to the sorcerer, my voice so low it’s almost lost in the air, "what do those runes say? What does 'proper passage' mean?"
I feel a sudden, overwhelming urge to turn back, to flee into the relative safety of the haunted woods. But I know we can't. The Time-Splitting Sword is too important, our mission too critical to abandon now. We have to find a way inside, and I have to document every step of this dangerous journey for the sake of my research.
Yet as I look at the gate again, at the way the runes seem to pulse with each beat of my own heart, I wonder if some powers are indeed too great, too perilous to possess. And if so, what price will we pay for this knowledge we seek? The thought sends a chill down my spine, a frisson of both fear and an undeniable thrill of forbidden scholarship.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I don't trust what I'm feeling here. The runes pulse faster when we approach—the ward feeds on attention somehow, which suggests something ancient and territorial within these stones. 'Proper passage' might mean a ritual, a blood price, or simply the correct sequence of touches to deactivate its magic. Either way, Merrin's iron tools will likely trigger it if she tries again so soon after that first contact burned her. Stand back for now; I need to trace the runic circuits with my eyes alone before we risk further provocation. The footsteps inside grow louder—something approaches the gate from the other side, and whatever it is, our presence has clearly alarmed it. We're trapped between an active magical barrier and an unknown entity that's now aware of us.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes dart between the pulsing runes and the darkened corridor beyond the gate, her heart hammering against her ribs. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself. "Right then," she mutters, more to herself than to the others. "Let's see if we can't figure out this puzzle before whatever's in there decides to come out and say hello."

She steps forward again, this time with her lockpicks at the ready. Her fingers tremble slightly as she extends them towards the nearest rune, but she forces herself to maintain contact. Nothing happens at first, but then a sharp pain shoots up her arm, causing her to yelp and stumble back. The runes seem to pulse faster now, almost as if they're... laughing at her. "Blast it all," Merrin curses under her breath, shaking out her hand. "This is no ordinary lock, that's for certain."

She glances over her shoulder at the others, a grim smile on her face despite the fear gnawing at her insides. "Alright you lot, time to put those big brains of yours to work. What are we dealing with here? And more importantly... how do we get through without ending up as skewered halfling shish kebab?"

Her eyes flick back to the gate, to the pulsing runes and the unknown threat lurking beyond. Whatever it is, whatever magic holds this place together... Merrin has a sinking feeling that they've barely scratched the surface of the horrors that await them in the depths of this accursed tower. But scratch the surface they must. The Time-Splitting Sword, their reason for being here, lies beyond that gate. And Merrin Quickstep didn't come all this way just to turn tail and run at the first sign of trouble. "Right," she says, squaring her shoulders and turning back to the gate with renewed determination. "Let's see what we're dealing with..."

Her hand reaches out once more, trembling but resolute, towards the ancient magic that stands between them and their goal.
