Round 71 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
Jeane Cromwell the Sorceress steps back from the ominous gate, her expression unreadable beneath the shadow of her hood. She gestures for Merrin to rejoin the group. "This ward is... more alive than I anticipated," she says coolly, her fingers tracing a sigil in the air as if testing its response. "The runes pulse with intent when touched—this isn't mere magic left behind. Something within these stones remembers purpose."
She turns to Seraphine, acknowledging the wizard's caution with a nod. "Agreed. Sentience suggests complication beyond simple arcane defense." Her eyes narrow as she studies the gate. "The footsteps we hear approach from within—that could be guardian or victim of this place's curse. Either way, barging through blindly invites whatever trap triggered when Merrin—" she glances pointedly at the halfling rogue "—disturbed that pressure plate."
Jeane's gaze sweeps across the party, assessing their readiness despite fatigue gnawing at her own reserves. "We need to understand this ward's mechanics before attempting entry. If it counter-magics arcane spells as I suspect, then forcing our way through becomes significantly more dangerous for Seraphine and myself."
She pauses, considering—as always—the angles of power and leverage in their situation. "Merrin's lockpicks are useful when magic won't cooperate, but we must proceed carefully now that the ward knows we're here." A faint smile plays at her lips, sharp as a razored edge. "I don't intend to become a sacrifice to some ancient stone monster's appetite for company."
Merrin Quickstep, wiry female halfling scout and lockbreaker
<perception>
The ancient gate hums ominously, its runes pulsing with sentient magic. Shadows dance in the alcoves, the air crackling with unnatural energy. Footsteps echo from within the tower, growing louder with each passing moment. </perception>
<emotion>
Apprehension grips Merrin's heart as she scans the gate for traps and weaknesses. The ward's hostile intent is palpable, and the approaching footsteps only heighten the sense of danger. She fights to keep a shiver of unease from her voice. </emotion>
<intent>
Merrin must find a way through the gate without setting off traps or provoking the ward's wrath. Her lockpicks and clever hands may be the key, but she'll need to proceed with utmost care. Every touch could trigger an unknown reaction from the sentient magic. </intent>
<hesitation>
Merrin hesitates to act too rashly. The last thing they need is to draw the attention of whatever lurks within the tower. She needs to be smart, not just fast. </hesitation>
<action>
Merrin takes a deep breath, steeling herself. She creeps closer to the gate, her keen eyes scanning for traps and pressure plates. Slowly, she reaches out to touch one of the pulsing runes. As her fingers make contact, the ward responds with an ominous hum. Merrin feels a magical backlash, like a warning not to proceed further. She withdraws her hand and mutters under her breath. "Jeane, what do those runes say? Any clue what we're dealing with here?" Merrin asks, glancing at the sorcerer. The halfling takes another deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. She knows they can't afford to linger much longer—whatever approaches from within the tower will be upon them soon. But rushing in blindly would be suicide. Merrin must use all her skills and wits to find a way through this gate. Time is running out. </action>
I need to document these runes while they're active—Jeane, stand back! The magic is reacting too strongly already. Merrin, whatever you do, don't touch anything else yet. Seraphine, can you identify the spell type? This feels... wrong somehow. Sentient wards are beyond my training. [Private thought: Is that arcane energy or something else? If it's truly alive, we might need to make an offering or speak its name before it decides we're trespassers.]
