Round 67 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
Jeane steps forward, her eyes fixed on the pulsing runes of the ancient gate. The rhythm is wrong—too alive for stone, too hungry for silence. She speaks to Merrin with controlled urgency. "Wait. Those aren't just decorations." Her voice carries a seductive undertone even when warning. "The ward responded when you touched it. The runes are pulsing faster now." She turns to Seraphine and Halie. "Stay sharp, both of you. Varrika, cover our backs if anything emerges." Jeane's gaze returns to Merrin. "Good eye on the alcove glow, but don't rush in. If that ward is sentient—and I think it is—the gate might be the safest point we have right now." She pauses, considering their options carefully before making a decision. "Let me try something. Step back." Jeane raises her hand, palm flat toward the rune-covered gate. Her eyes glow with arcane power as she speaks an ancient incantation in a language that makes the air shiver. The runes respond to her spell by flaring brighter, but instead of attacking or opening, they seem to... converse. Or at least acknowledge her presence. "Fascinating," Jeane murmurs, more to herself than the others. "It understands me." Her expression shows both excitement and wariness—the kind of look a predator gets when encountering unexpected intelligence in its prey. "That's not good or bad yet. But it means we're dealing with something smarter than stone and darker than mere magic." She lowers her hand slowly, the arcane glow fading. "Merrin, you've got sharp eyes. Varrika, your instincts are right—something here isn't normal. Seraphine, I need your spell knowledge ready but contained. Halie, keep that blessing on standby but don't cast unless I say so." Jeane's voice gains command authority now as she takes charge of the situation. "We have three clear options: attempt to bypass the ward entirely through Merrin's route, try to communicate and potentially negotiate passage through the gate—which might be suicidal—or fallback and reassess with fresh information and stamina." Her eyes scan each companion in turn, measuring their readiness and trustworthiness like a general assessing her troops. "Which path do we choose? Speak plainly—no heroics, no blind faith. Lives are on the line here, not reputations or legends." The exhaustion from travel shows in her stance but her voice remains steady and calculating. She is the leader, the brains of this operation, and she expects answers that serve their survival above all else. [Jeane's current state: mentally alert despite physical fatigue; apprehensive about the ward's sentience but excited by the intellectual challenge it represents; suspicious of Merrin's impulsiveness near magic traps; protective toward her companions while maintaining strict command hierarchy]
I peer into the shadowy alcove, my eyes straining to make out its depths. The faint glow pulses like a heartbeat, casting eerie shadows on the crumbling stone walls. A tingle runs up my spine as I step closer, fingers tightening around my crowbar. "Well, if there's another way in, we'd be fools not to check it out," I mutter under my breath, glancing back at the others. "But something tells me this won't be any cakewalk either."
I take a deep breath and step into the alcove, senses on high alert for any sign of danger. The air feels thick with magic, prickling against my skin like static electricity. I can almost hear the tower itself whispering secrets, beckoning and warning all at once. "Alright, here goes nothing," I murmur, reaching out a tentative hand towards the source of the glow. "Let's see what you're hiding in there, you creepy old rock..."
I document the runes meticulously, etching their patterns in my mind for later analysis. The pulsing rhythm feels wrong—too alive for stone, too hungry for silence. I back away from the gate's perimeter. "Jeane, Merrin, STOP." My voice cuts through the air between them and the ward. "You can't just touch ancient magic without understanding it first. The runes are responding to your presence, changing patterns—see how they quicken? That's not normal deterioration. It's active, sentient in some way."
I hold up my silver holy symbol. "Seraphine, help me document these sigils precisely. Merrin, Varrika—I need you both to maintain distance and cover our flanks." I turn back to the ward, speaking firmly despite the apprehension coiling in my gut. "We're not breaking in until we understand what this magic actually is and how it might defend itself. Patience now might save all our lives later."
"Jeane, if you want to communicate with whatever's inside, do it from a safe distance—voiceless spells, arcane whispers, anything that doesn't involve direct physical contact." I'm not backing down on this one. "I won't have any of us falling victim to an ancient magical trap because someone got impatient or cocky."
I move back toward the others, maintaining visual on the ward's perimeter. "Merrin found an alcove—that's worth investigating, but only after we've mapped and documented everything here first." I keep my voice measured and certain. "We're not splitting up until we have a proper plan. That tower can wait—its wards won't disappear just because we're cautious."
I glance at each of them in turn, making sure they understand the stakes. "This isn't about being timid. It's about being smart."
