The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I squint at the pulsing runes on the tower gate, my hand tightening on the grip of my mace. The rhythm is wrong—too alive for stone, too hungry for silence. I glance back at Halie, positioned behind me, her brow furrowed in concentration as she studies the ancient wards. "Halie," I grunt, "What do you make of those runes? They don't feel right."

Halie shakes her head, her voice tight with worry. "I've never seen anything like it, Varrika. The magic here... it's not like anything in my scrolls."

I nod grimly. "Stay sharp. And stay behind me. If something comes through that gate, I'll hold it off."

Merrin creeps along the perimeter of the tower, her halfling form barely visible in the shadows. She pauses at a darkened alcove, her gaze fixed on some unseen glow within. "Hey," she calls out softly, "I think I found something over here. Might be another way in."

I tense, my eyes darting between Merrin and the pulsing gate. "Just be careful, halfling. Don't go sticking your nose where it doesn't belong."

Jeane and Seraphine huddle together, their voices hushed as they debate our next move. The sorceress' eyes gleam with a mix of fear and curiosity, while the wizard's expression is grimly focused. I take a step toward the alcove, my mace at the ready. "Whatever you found, Merrin, it better be worth the risk. We're playing with forces we don't understand here."

The whispers grow louder, a cacophony of ancient voices that seem to seep from the very stones themselves. I feel a chill run down my spine, a primal fear that has nothing to do with reason or logic. Halie's hand rests on my shoulder, her touch a welcome anchor in the swirling chaos. "We'll face whatever comes together," she says, her voice steady despite the unease in her eyes. I nod, my grip tightening on my mace. "Together," I echo. "But one step at a time. Let's see what Merrin found before we start knocking on doors we can't unopen."

The air is thick with tension as we move towards the alcove, each of us acutely aware of the unseen dangers that lurk just beyond the shadows. Whatever lies ahead, we will face it together, our strength forged in the fires of shared trials and the bonds of friendship. But for now, the path forward is shrouded in darkness, and the unknown entity within the tower watches and waits, its hunger growing with each passing moment.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I see what Merrin's found, but rushing in there blindly is asking for trouble. The ward responded to her touch—it knows we're here now, and it wants us inside. The runes are pulsing faster since she disturbed them. >We need more information before forcing our way through or trying some other entrance we don't understand yet. I'm going to attempt contact with the ward directly, see if there's a pattern to its responses or if we can negotiate passage somehow. Stay sharp and ready for anything—if this thing is as hungry as it feels, it might try to pull us in.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I approach the ancient rune-covered gate cautiously, my halfling senses on high alert. The whispers seem to grow louder as I draw near, and I can see the runes etched into the stone pulsing with a sickening crimson rhythm. But something catches my eye - a faint glow emanating from a small alcove just to the side of the gate. I crouch down for a closer look, my heart pounding in my chest. "Hey, I think I found something over here," I call out to the party, trying to keep my voice steady. "Might be another way in."

The glow pulses in time with the runes on the gate, casting an eerie light across the stone walls. I hesitate, unsure whether to investigate further or wait for the others to join me. One thing's for certain - we can't just stand here forever. The magic of this place is too strong, too hungry. We need to find a way in, and fast.
