The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Merrin inch closer to the hidden alcove, her movements tense and deliberate. My heart hammers against my ribs as the runes on the gate pulse with an unnatural intensity, their crimson glow seeming to mock our presence. The whispers grow louder, a sinister susurrus that sets my teeth on edge.
I find my thoughts drifting to the mission ahead. The Time-Splitting Sword, lost for centuries in this accursed place. Its power is legendary, said to be able to divide time itself. But what price does such magic demand? What dark power fuels its existence here, in this crumbling tower at the heart of the Whispering Woods?
Jeane's warning about the ward's response rings in my ears. We need to understand its language before we can even hope to communicate with it, let alone bypass its defenses. Yet, Merrin's discovery of an alternate entrance fills me with a flicker of hope.
"I think Merrin may have found something," I whisper to Halie, who stands beside me, her holy symbol clutched tightly in her hand. She nods, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and determination.
The air crackles with an ancient energy, thick and oppressive. It’s like the very stones of the tower are alive, watching us, waiting for us to make a mistake. I can feel a strange pressure building behind my eyes, a dull ache that speaks of some unseen force testing our resolve.
I draw in a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic beat of my heart. We've come too far, sacrificed too much, to turn back now. But the thought of what lies ahead—the unknown entity within the tower, the dark magic of the ward—it chills me to the bone.
Still, knowledge calls. The secrets held within these walls could rewrite entire chapters of history. And for a scholar like me, that temptation is almost impossible to resist.
"Jeane," I call out softly, my voice strained but firm. "What do you think? Should we investigate this alcove, or stick with our original plan?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I signal Merrin back sharply, then scan the ward's runes again. The rhythm has changed—too alive for stone, too hungry for silence. We can't afford to rush this. Halie, I understand your eagerness but we need to analyze these defenses first. Merrin found an alternate entrance? That's promising, but it could be a trap within a trap. If the ward is sentient, as it seems, then it might guide us into something worse. I approach the alcove cautiously, arcane senses extended, and whisper: This feels... deliberate. Like it wants us to enter through here specifically. The glow pulses with an unnatural rhythm that matches my own heartbeat. It's almost enticing—dangerously so. We should investigate further but stay alert for any magical triggers or illusionary paths. Merrin's rogue skills are invaluable here, but her iron tools might set off some arcane safeguards. Let's have Varrika cover our backs and Halie prepare a blessing just in case. Seraphine, can you sense anything from your vantage point? Any magical signatures beyond what we're seeing with the naked eye? This place feels wrong on every level—I can smell the dark magic like rotten fruit. But that sword could be the key to preventing a far greater disaster. We came here for a reason, and hesitation won't make the unknown entity go away. I'll try to establish some communication or at least understand the ward's language before we proceed further. If it responds favorably—or unfavorably—then we can adjust our approach accordingly. Stamina matters more than bravado right now.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I crouch low, my eyes scanning the perimeter of the tower, looking for any sign of an alternate entrance. The whispers seem to grow louder as I move away from the main gate, a sinister susurrus that sets my teeth on edge. Suddenly, I spot a small alcove set into the stone wall, partially hidden by overgrown vines. A faint glow emanates from within, pulsing in time with the rhythm of the runes on the gate. I inch closer, my hand hovering over the opening, but something makes me hesitate. "Hey," I call out quietly to the others. "I think I found something over here. Might be another way in."

Varrika's voice comes from behind me, low and urgent. "Merrin! Get back here! We need to stick together if we're going to face whatever's in there."

I glance back at her, then at the others. Jeane is already moving towards us, her brow furrowed as she studies the alcove. Halie and Seraphine follow close behind, their weapons at the ready. "Alright," I say, taking a deep breath. "Let's see what we're dealing with here."
