The ancient stones groan underfoot as the party splits up, each member moving with a purpose that belies their mounting apprehension. Varrika's call to Merrin cuts through the thick air like a blade, sharp and insistent—a warning delivered by a dwarf who knows the taste of blood too well for comfort. Jeane circles the perimeter with predatory grace, her senses extended like antennae seeking out the tower's secrets. The stone beneath her feet pulses with a sickening rhythm, each beat sending a fresh wave of dread through her wings. She understands now, with a clarity that comes from too much experience and not enough sleep, that whatever lies beyond this gate is no mere treasure hoard.

Merrin moves like a shadow along the wall, her halfling reflexes honed by years of avoiding trouble she couldn't talk or fight her way out of. The susurrus grows louder, more insistent—a thousand voices whispering in tongues long forgotten. She presses closer, driven by curiosity and a stubborn refusal to back down from a challenge, even when every instinct screams at her to turn tail and run.

Halie maintains distance, her eyes scanning the perimeter for signs of further threats or weaknesses. The runes on the gate pulse with malevolent energy, each beat a fresh wave of nausea washing over her. This is no simple ward—this thing is alive, hungry, and getting stronger by the moment. She signals everyone back sharply, hand gestures clear: stand down, stay outside the immediate perimeter, keep weapons down unless absolutely necessary.

The whispers intensify, coalescing into something almost like speech, though the language remains utterly alien. Jeane's crimson eyes narrow as she focuses on the source—somewhere inside the tower, something is approaching the gate. The footsteps are slow, deliberate, and heavy enough to shake the very foundations of the ancient structure.

Merrin freezes mid-crouch, her hand hovering over a particularly complex lock mechanism. The iron tools in her hands feel suddenly like bait—she might as well be ringing a dinner bell for whatever's inside. She glances back at Halie, seeking guidance, but the cleric's expression is grim, her fingers tracing the outline of a holy symbol beneath her robes.

Jeane signals again: stop fiddling with the lock mechanism entirely. You're provoking whatever's inside. The hunger in the air grows more intense, focusing on Merrin's position near the gate. Whatever this ward protects, it doesn't want visitors—especially not ones carrying iron tools that might be used to force entry.

The tower groans again, louder this time, as if responding to the growing tension outside its walls. The footsteps inside come closer, each heavy thud sending vibrations through the stone underfoot. Whatever's approaching the gate, it's almost here—and the ward is getting stronger, more aggressive, with every passing moment.

Halie steps back further, her voice low and urgent as she hisses to Jeane: "That thing's sentient—probably ancient magic given life somehow. We need to understand its mechanics before attempting entry." Her fingers continue tracing runes in the air, preparing blessings against undead and dark magic just in case.

Jeane nods grimly, already formulating spells in her mind that might disable or bypass the ward without direct confrontation. But her eyes keep darting to Merrin's position—too close to the gate, too tempting a target for whatever's inside. She needs to get the halfling away from there before something emerges.

Merrin meets Jeane's gaze and sees the worry etched across the succubus's features. She curses under her breath and slowly withdraws her tools, moving back toward the group with exaggerated care. The whispers follow her, growing fainter as she puts distance between herself and the gate.

The tower falls silent again, the footsteps ceasing just short of the barrier. Whatever's inside is watching now, waiting for the next move from these intruders who've dared to disturb its long slumber. The runes on the gate pulse once more—satisfaction?.
