Round 63 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I eye Merrin warily as she scurries along the wall, her movements tense and erratic. My grip tightens on my mace, ready for whatever might come barreling out of that tower. The whispers grow louder, a sinister susurrus that sets my teeth on edge. "Merrin!" I call out, my gravel-edged voice cutting through the tension. "Get back here! We need to stick together if we're going to face whatever's in there."
I turn to Jeane, who's circling the tower like a cat stalking a mouse. "You find anything?" I ask gruffly. My eyes scan the crumbling stonework, looking for any sign of another entrance. Halie's voice cuts through my thoughts, her tone tight with worry. "Varrika, I need you to stand guard at that corner. Keep an eye out for any signs of movement."
I nod curtly, moving into position as instructed. My eyes dart between the tower entrance and the shadows beyond, muscles coiled and ready to spring into action at the first sign of danger. As I wait, I find my thoughts drifting to the mission ahead. The Time-Splitting Sword, lost for centuries in this accursed place. Whatever dark magic animates this ward, whatever hungry beast lurks within... we'll have to face it all if we want that blade in our hands. I steel myself, drawing on the grim humor that's seen me through countless battles. "Well," I mutter under my breath, "looks like we're about to find out just how many lives a dwarf has."
I circle the perimeter of the tower slowly, every sense extended, trying to understand what we're dealing with before we stumble into it blindly. The stone itself feels alive under my boots—vibrating faintly with contained magical energy. Whatever this ward is, whatever ancient sorcerer designed it, they wanted something trapped inside very badly indeed. The runes on the gate pulse faster now, a sickening crimson rhythm that makes Merrin's iron tools seem almost innocent by comparison. If those are arcane triggers set to detonate from physical manipulation, we could have just signed our own death warrants. I signal everyone back with sharp hand gestures—stay outside the immediate perimeter, keep weapons down unless absolutely necessary. "This thing is sentient," I mutter mostly to myself, though Seraphine hears and nods grim agreement. "It's responding to presence more than temperature or movement. That suggests intent." Which means whoever—or whatever—built this ward designed it with awareness in mind. Probably means it's loaded with counter-spells and defensive protocols specifically designed to nullify arcane intrusion. "We need to understand its language before we try to speak to it," I say louder now, stepping back from the gate's edge where the stone feels warm with trapped magic. "Halie, document everything you can see on those runes—positions, colors, pulsing patterns. Merrin, stop fiddling with the lock mechanism entirely. You're provoking whatever's inside."
I press my ear against the rough stone, straining to hear any whispers or signs of movement from within. The susurrus seems to grow louder, more insistent, as if the very walls themselves are trying to warn us away. A shudder runs through me and I find myself itching to draw my dagger, but I resist the urge. Stealth and caution will serve us better than brute force here. Crouching low, I begin to move along the perimeter of the tower, my eyes scanning for any hint of an alternative entrance. The whispers seem to follow me, a sinister echo that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. But I press on, determined to find a way inside without triggering whatever dark magic animates this accursed place. As I round a corner, I spot a small, almost hidden alcove set into the stone. It's partially obscured by overgrowth, but there seems to be a faint glow emanating from within. Curiosity piqued, I inch closer, my hand reaching for the hilt of my dagger as I go. Just as I'm about to peer into the alcove, a loud scraping sound echoes from somewhere deeper inside the tower. It's the unmistakable sound of stone on stone, as if some ancient mechanism is being activated. My heart leaps into my throat and I freeze, straining to hear any other sounds that might indicate the presence of whatever lies within. After a moment that feels like an eternity, the scraping stops and all is silent once more. Taking a deep breath, I turn back towards where I left my companions, ready to signal them over and share what I've found. But as I do, I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched, that whatever hungry beast lurks within this tower has sensed our presence and is waiting for us to make a mistake.
