The moment of truth arrives as Merrin carefully manipulates the ancient lock, her fingers dancing across the intricate mechanism. With a satisfying click, the gate creaks open, revealing a dimly lit corridor beyond. The runes on the gate pulse with an otherworldly energy, as if acknowledging the party's presence. As the group steps forward, Varrika's mace at the ready, a faint whispering echoes from the corridor, growing louder with each passing moment. The air seems to vibrate with an eerie presence, and Halie's eyes widen as she senses a dark magic emanating from within. Jeane's gaze darts between the runes and the corridor, her mind racing with the implications of their discovery. The Ward's magic begins to weave itself around them, a gentle hum that escalates into a cacophony of whispers and screeches. The runes on the gate continue to pulse, feeding off the party's collective energy. It becomes clear that the unknown entity within the tower is drawing closer, drawn by the Ward's magic. A new detail emerges: the corridor beyond the gate is lined with ancient murals depicting a dark ritual, where the Time-Splitting Sword was said to be forged.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand before the ancient gate, my eyes fixed on the swirling runes that seem to pulse with a life of their own. The air here is thick, heavy with an energy that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end. It's a hunger, a desperate need, and it's drawn straight from the magic we carry.
Merrin's pick rattles against the lock, the sound a sharp contrast to the soft whispering that seems to emanate from within the very stones of the tower. I can feel it now, not just with my ears, but deep in my bones—a malevolent presence, old and vast, awakening to our intrusion.
The runes on the gate twist and writhe, forming new patterns, each one more complex and predatory than the last. They feel like eyes, watching us, judging us. I see Halie shift her weight nervously beside me, her holy symbol clutched tightly in her hand. She's right to be wary. Whatever this is, it isn't just a lock or a barrier. It’s alive.
I take a step closer, my fingers tracing the edge of a particularly intricate sigil. It feels warm under my touch, almost hot. The ward seems to shiver at the contact, the whispering growing louder, more insistent. This is no mere enchantment. It’s a creature, a guardian, and it’s starving.
I turn to face my companions, my expression grave. "This isn't just a ward," I say, my voice so low it's almost lost in the air. "It's sentient. Hungry. And it knows we're here."
My gaze sweeps over them—Varrika, her mace held ready; Merrin, her tools still pressed against the lock; Halie, her face a mask of holy dread. I feel a sudden, chilling clarity.
"We can't force this," I continue, my voice gaining conviction even as my heart hammers against my ribs. "Not with magic, not with brute strength. We need to... negotiate. To offer something in return for passage."
I turn back to the gate, to the gaping maw of the sigil I touched. It seems to be waiting for me, its edges glowing with an eerie, inviting light. The ward has made its choice, and now it's our turn.*

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step between Merrin and the gate, pushing her lockpicks aside with my bootheel. "Stop." The runes aren't just symbols—they're mouths. This entire ward is alive in some way, and it's starving. Forcing entry now means we taste like food to whatever's guarding this door. I don't care how good Merrin is; iron tools against hungry magic? That's a recipe for getting our insides rearranged. Varrika can smash skeletons all day, but she can't punch through arcane counter-magic. We back away from the gate now. Slowly. Respectfully. Like we haven't even seen the damn thing yet. Then Merrin and I circle the tower walls looking for loose stones or hidden entrances. If this thing's really sentient, let it think we're too scared to try anything stupid. Better to waste an hour searching than to feed ourselves to it on a silver platter. The footsteps inside aren't stopping. Whatever's in there is still coming. We need to get inside before whatever that is reaches the gate. But I'm not risking my coven for a quick entry. Jeane doesn't gamble with lives she values.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin steps back from the gate, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Alright, alright, you've convinced me. No need to go biting our heads off just yet." She turns to the others, hands on her hips. "But circling this tower forever ain't gonna get us anywhere either. So here's the plan: I'm gonna take a quick peek around back, see if there's some other way in. Maybe a window or a cellar hatch, something."

She glances at Halie, a smirk tugging at her lips. "And yes, I know - 'trap city', right? But we can't just stand here listening to those whispers forever. So keep your wits about you and your eyes peeled. And if you hear me screaming, send in the cavalry."

With that, Merrin slinks away from the gate, her quick steps carrying her around the crumbling stone tower. The others watch her go, a tangle of relief and worry etched on their faces. It's a risky move, but it might just be their best chance at getting inside without drawing the wrath of whatever hungry magic lurks behind that ancient door. As Merrin disappears from view, the gate looms ominous before them, its runes pulsing with an otherworldly hunger. The whispers grow louder, more insistent, as if urging them to step closer, to feel their teeth sink into the party's flesh. Jeane swallows hard, her hands trembling at her sides. "May the gods have mercy on our souls..." she murmurs, more to herself than to the others. And then, with a final deep breath, Merrin vanishes around the corner, leaving the others to wait in tense silence, wondering what secrets - and dangers - she might uncover on the other side of the tower's stone walls.
