The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I won't let any of us get pulled into whatever this thing's hunger is made of. Seraphine, Varrika—stay behind me and Merrin, I don't care if you have to hide in the treeline, but stay out of its direct line of sight until we figure this out. Jeane, map those sigils thoroughly but keep your distance. We're dealing with something that feeds on arcane power, and you're practically walking around with a sign saying 'eat me' painted on your forehead right now. I'll document the runes from here, we need to know what sustains this thing once it's activated. I don't care how good Merrin is at disarming traps—this thing is alive, or alive enough that the difference doesn't matter. Touching those locks might be like poking a dragon awake with a sharp stick, and I'm not planning on any of us being dragon food today.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the outer ring of runes carefully from this distance—they pulse with dark energy when Merrin's foot comes near. The thing is sentient, and it’s hungry for something—magic, perhaps, or life force in general. We can't afford to trigger its defensive spells by blundering into trap zones. I step forward slowly, gesturing for the others to maintain distance. Merrin, put those lockpicks away for now—we don’t know what they’ll do when they touch the runes. Varrika, good question about counter-magic. I could try dispelling the ward’s effect, but if it's arcane-countered... I close my eyes and focus, feeling out the magical currents flowing through the gate. The hunger isn't specifically for us, not as people—but any spellcaster who tries to force entry might feed the thing power in ways we don’t want to discover. Halie’s right that divine magic could provoke it—we need a non-magical solution first, or at least one that's carefully calibrated. Let me map these sigils properly before anyone attempts entry; there has to be a sequence here, a way through without alerting whatever's inside.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step back from the gate, hands raised in placation. The runes seem to pulse hungrily as I withdraw my touch, like a predator sizing up its prey. A shiver runs down my spine at the thought. "Alright, alright, I hear ya," I mutter to Jeane and Halie. To Seraphine, I ask, "Think that ward'll keep us safe if we manage to slip past it?"

I scan the tower walls, searching for any other means of entry beyond the daunting gate. My rogue's instincts are screaming at me not to underestimate whatever magic is at work here. "Anyone else get the feeling we're being watched?" I mutter, more to myself than the others. The hair on the back of my neck is standing on end, and it's not just from the cold.
