The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The air grows heavy with anticipation as we wait for Jeane's assessment of the runes. My muscles tense, ready for action but also wary of rushing in blindly. Halie's words echo in my mind - the magic is hunting us already. I can almost feel its hungry gaze upon us. I step forward, placing myself between Halie and the gate. If anything comes through that door, it'll have to go through me first. My heavy mace feels like an extension of my arm, a comforting weight in my grip. "Merrin," I call out, keeping my voice low but commanding. "Wait for Jeane's signal before you try anything with those locks. We don't know what we're dealing with yet."

I turn to Seraphine, the elf wizard who's been uncharacteristically silent. "Any ideas from your end? Spells or counter-magic that might help us get through this gate without alerting whatever's inside?"

My eyes dart back to the runes, watching for any change in their pulsing pattern. The hunger in those ancient symbols sends a shiver down my spine, but I refuse to let it show on my face. We're here for the sword, and by the gods, we'll get it - even if we have to fight our way through an army of undead guardians. But first, we need to be smart about this. We need information, a plan. And right now, Jeane's runes are our best chance at understanding what we're up against. I settle into a ready stance, every sense on high alert as we wait for the sorcerer's assessment. The battle may not have begun yet, but the tension in the air feels like the calm before a storm.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I count five distinct magical sigils arranged in an arcane pentagram around the gate hinges. The outer ring pulses with dark energy when Merrin's foot comes near—the thing is sentient, and it’s hungry for something we carry. Wait. Do not touch that iron to the wards yet. I need to map the entire sequence before you start poking at ancient magic seals with cold metal tools. This isn't a simple lock—it's a trap designed to detect specific types of essence or energy. If we trigger it wrong, whatever’s inside gets an early warning and probably unleashes something nasty on us all. Halie's right, her divine aura might feed the thing power if she tries to shield us now. We need a clean opening without alerting its senses more than necessary. Merrin, put those lockpicks away for now—we don’t know what they’ll do when they touch the runes. Varrika, good question about counter-magic. I could try dispelling the ward’s effect, but if it's arcane-countered like some older barriers, my spell might just empower it instead. We need to understand its mechanics before attempting any magical disruption—what triggers it and what sustains it.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's gaze darts between the hungry runes and her party mates, her mind racing with possibilities. She can practically feel the wards' eyes boring into her, sizing up each of them like a predator stalking prey. She licks her lips, tasting the fear that's creeping up the back of her throat. "Alright, alright, I hear ya," she says to Jeane and Halie, backing away from the gate with her hands raised in surrender. "But what else we got? Any other way into this tower 'sides that hungry beast?"

Her eyes flick to Seraphine, a glimmer of hope shining through the apprehension. "What about that shield of yours? Think it'll keep us safe from whatever's comin' out that door?"
