Round 42 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I grip my heavy mace tighter, the weight of the steel a comfort in my scarred hands. My eyes dart from the writhing runes to Halie's pale face and back again. "Halie," I call out, my gravel voice cutting through the tension, "get ready with that shield spell. We may need it sooner than we thought."
I take a step forward, positioning myself between Halie and the looming corridor beyond the gate. The air feels thick with dark magic, pressing against my skin like an ominous presence. "Jeane," I bark, "are you getting anything from those runes? We don't have all day to stand here puzzling it out."
My heart pounds in my chest, a familiar rush of adrenaline before battle. But there's a new feeling too, a gnawing doubt. These ancient wards... they feel alive, hungry somehow. Like they're just waiting for us to make a mistake. I glance at Merrin, still fiddling with those lockpicks. "Merrin, love," I call out, trying to keep the edge from my voice, "if you're going to do something, do it quick. But be careful. I've got a feeling this thing doesn't like surprises."
The footsteps grow louder now, echoing from deep within the tower. Something ancient and malevolent is coming. And when it gets here, I'll be ready.
I don't like this. The runes aren't responding uniformly—they're choosing targets. They tracked iron first, then living flesh. This thing is sentient, possibly even sapient in some way, and it's assessing threats. Merrin, back away from the gate now before you trigger something we can't undo. Varikka, stand ready to block whatever emerges, but don't approach unless I give the signal—these wards might have area effects that'll catch us all if we get too close together. I need a moment to map this sequence properly. The pattern has shifted since Merrin touched it; we're dealing with something adaptive here. Halie, prepare a shield spell, but make sure it's non-arcane—if these defenses counter magic, your divine energy might just feed them instead of protecting us. Seraphine, can you feel the temperature change when you approached? There's a thermal signature tied to the ward's activity. We're not just dealing with stone and runes here; this is something that thinks and reacts in real time. This isn't an ordinary locked door anymore. This is a living barrier designed to test and eliminate threats before they reach whatever's inside. And those footsteps... they stopped when we froze, which means whatever's in there knows we're here now for certain.
I take a step back from the gate, hands raised in surrender. The runes writhe and pulse, their ancient energy crackling in the air. I swallow hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "Alright, alright. No need to get your ectoplasmic panties in a twist." I turn to Jeane, "Darling, if you've got anything from your sorcerous side that can help us make sense of this...?"
The footsteps grow louder, echoing from within the tower. My heart pounds in my chest, adrenaline mixing with fear. I grip my crowbar tighter, the metal cool against my palms. "Halie, love," I continue, "any chance you can give us a heads-up on what we're dealing with? Jeane, if you've got anything..."
I let my words trail off, not wanting to push too hard. The last thing we need is for someone to get trigger-happy and set off some ancient curse or worse. But still, every instinct in me screams to run, to get as far away from this place as possible. Yet here we are, staring down the barrel of what could be our greatest adventure...or our final folly. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever comes next. Whatever this tower holds, we'll face it together. Even if I have to drag Varrika out of here kicking and screaming. "Well," I mutter, "here goes nothing."
