The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I trust Jeane's judgment, but we cannot afford to study this thing forever while unknown horrors approach from within. Merrin, back away completely. Seraphine, prepare a shield spell—something non-arcane, defensive only. Varrika is right: if something comes through that gate before we're ready, we need every kind of protection. (softly) These runes aren't just symbols—they're eyes. They're tasting the air, deciding which of us is the biggest threat. And I think... I think Merrin might be right about the iron first rule. The moment she touched those bars, the pattern changed. We don't have time for careful mapping when there are footsteps inside and a ward that's choosing its victims. If we're going to try something, it needs to be now—smart and fast. But if you all want to stand here documenting ancient evil while things come for us from both directions... well, I won't stop you.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step back from the gate, my heart pounding in my ears as the runes continue their ominous dance. "Alright, alright, I'm moving." I hold up my hands in a gesture of surrender, backing away slowly. As I do, I catch Varrika's eye. She's got that look on her face like she's about to charge in there with mace swinging. I shake my head slightly at her, trying to convey 'not yet'. We need more information before we start throwing down. My eyes dart to Halie, hoping for some divine insight here. "Halie, love, any chance you can give us a heads-up on what we're dealing with? Because these runes seem to think I'm their mortal enemy."

I turn to Jeane next, keeping my voice low and urgent. "Jeane, darling, if you've got anything from your sorcerous side that can help us make sense of this... now would be the time."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I'm mapping these runes because they're alive—watching us—and Merrin just set something off with those iron tools. They responded differently to her touch than they did to Seraphine's arcane energy, and now they're pulsing faster every time she twitches a finger near them. We don't force this gate until I understand what triggers its defensive spells. The runes aren't responding uniformly—they're choosing targets. They track iron first, then living flesh. This thing is sentient, possibly even sapient in some way, and it's assessing threats.
