Round 35

Phase: escalating

The runes pulsed with malevolent light, each symbol seeming to stare at the party like cold, calculating eyes. A heavy thud resonated from within the tower, growing louder by the second. Varrika stepped forward, her scarred hands gripping a massive mace. “Halie, stay sharp,” she growled. “We need your faith now more than ever.” The dwarf woman positioned herself between the cleric and the ominous gate, her expression grim.
Jeane approached cautiously, her wings tucked close to her body. She extended a hand towards the runes, feeling their power pulse against her own magic. “A sentient ward,” she whispered. “Ancient beyond reckoning.” The symbols weren’t just markings—they were eyes watching them, studying their every move. Whatever was inside had stopped its approach, now simply... observing.
Merrin circled the gate warily, her rogue’s instincts screaming warnings. She muttered under her breath, “Ugh, I hate magical defenses. Always so...icky.” But she kept her fear in check, focusing on finding any physical traps first. She motioned for Varrika to hold back with her weapons.
“Let me work—if there’s a way through this thing, we’ll find it without setting off half the tower,” Merrin said softly. “Stay alert—whatever’s inside is definitely watching us.” She began tracing the patterns with lockpicks, careful not to trigger any hidden mechanisms.
Jeane nodded slowly, arcane energy crackling around her wand as she prepared a spell. “I’ll try to slow them down—Merrin and I will focus on suppression fire while Seraphine provides support magic.” She met Merrin’s eyes. “Remember, we’re not here for a fight—we need to push through and find the sword before whatever’s really in charge of this place shows up.”
Seraphine moved closer, her staff held ready. “Understood,” she breathed. “And... be careful. This place feels alive somehow. Like the very stone is watching us.” She repeated the character's name instead of using he/him pronouns.
Merrin nodded, pressing deeper into the corridor. The air here was thick with dust and the stench of decay, but something else lingered beneath—the unmistakable scent of ancient magic, dark and wrong in a way that made her skin crawl. She moved forward cautiously, every sense alert for any sign of immediate danger.
They burst past the corner into what looked like an intersection—three corridors branching off, each one leading deeper into darkness and oppressive silence that seemed to press in from all sides. Jeane moved forward carefully, her wand held ready as she extended her senses again.
“I can feel... something,” she said softly. “Not magic exactly, but... a presence. Something big.” Her wings rustled nervously. “It’s coming from the left corridor.”
Merrin sighed, setting down her lockpicks. “Great, so we’re back to ‘hack the magical door’ or ‘talk to the sentient stone.’ Either way, we need to hurry.” She looked up at the tower looming above them. “Because whatever’s making that noise inside? It doesn’t sound like it’s going to wait much longer.”
Seraphine shifted nervously behind them. “What... what do you mean?”
Jeane concentrated, her brow furrowing as she strained to sense beyond the mundane. “I think I’m onto something,” she whispered. “There’s a sequence here—a rhythm to the pulses.” Her eyes narrowed in concentration.
Merrin moved into position at the intersection’s edge, crossbow coming up instinctively even though she knew it was probably useless against whatever lay ahead. “Change of plans—we need to find cover now.” She looked at Jeane and Seraphine in turn. “Jeane? Any magical readings?”
The sorceress nodded grimly, arcane energy already gathering at her fingertips. “Something’s there,” she hissed. “But it’s not like the ward—this feels more... organic. Living.” Her voice dropped further. “Could be those skeletons we heard about.”
Merrin felt her stomach drop as understanding hit her. The tower wasn’t just haunted by ghosts—the entire building itself was alive with this entity’s power, everything within it twisted and corrupted by its presence.
Seraphine seemed to be having a similar reaction—her face pale with horror as she clutched her staff like a lifeline. “Those... those things were once people?” she whispered.
Jeane stepped forward slowly, her arcane energy flickering uncertainly around her wand as she struggled to maintain a defensive stance while also trying to understand what they were dealing with. “Physical—uninjured but fatigued from travel”
Emotional: apprehensive about magical defenses, frustrated with own impulsiveness
Goals: find alternative entry method without triggering traps; assess interior for immediate threats before deeper exploration
Relationships: trusts Merrin’s skill but worries about her impulsiveness near dangerous magic traps; frustrated with Halie’s recklessness in forcing entry without full investigation of the ward’s defenses
Carry forward: must verify rune mechanics before attempting entry to avoid triggering defensive spells; gate slammed shut magically after opening, now trapped inside tower perimeter
