Shadow of the Ancients / Run 017 / Main Story
Round 27 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin mutters under her breath, the pulsing runes on the ancient gate seem to respond, their energy surging in a faint, warning hum. The air around them crackles with an unnatural electricity, and the ward's magic begins to seep into the surrounding environment, subtly altering the local flora. The trees nearby seem to twist and writhe, their branches tangling together in a macabre dance. Jeane's eyes widen as she feels the ward's energy spreading, her own arcane abilities reacting to the dark magic. "It's not just a barrier," she warns the party. "The ward is alive, and it's adapting to our presence."
The unknown entity within the tower takes another step forward, its slow, deliberate pace unsettling the group. The runes on the gate pulse with malevolent energy, as if urging them to proceed into the heart of darkness.
The pulsing of the runes grows more insistent, their dark energy crawling along my skin. Whatever's in that tower... it knows we're here now. I can feel it, watching us through those damned symbols. My hand tightens on the haft of my mace, muscles coiled and ready to spring into action at the first sign of threat. But for now, I hold my ground, letting the others do their thing with the magic and runes. Halie's right about one thing—we need to be careful here. That ward... it feels alive in some way, hungry and ancient and wrong. Not natural at all. I don't like it. But we came this far, and the thought of turning back now sits like a stone in my gut. We've got a job to do, and by the gods, I aim to see it through. So I'll stand watch while they work on the gate. Keep my eyes sharp for any sign of undead or worse. And when we get through... well, then it's time to put these calluses to good use. Just let whatever's in there come on. Varrika's here, and I'm not going down easy.
I see what this thing is now. This ward isn't just magic—it's alive, in its own twisted way, and it's starving for power. The runes aren't just symbols; they're eyes. They're watching us, studying our magic, deciding if we're worth the trouble or not. If Merrin touches those iron tools now, she'll probably trigger every alarm spell this thing has. We need to test its triggers carefully before forcing entry. I'll cast a small detection spell—something non-arcane, subtle—that might show us what sets it off. If it responds violently, we pull back and reassess. Unless you have a better idea?
Merrin inches closer to the pulsing runes, her eyes narrowing as she studies the ancient symbols. She mutters under her breath, "Alright, you magical puzzle box, let's see what makes you tick."
With a deep breath, Merrin reaches out and traces one of the runes with the tip of her finger, feeling the energy hum beneath her touch. She watches intently for any reaction from the ward, ready to pull back at the first sign of trouble. "Okay, so far, so good," she says quietly. "But I've got a feeling this is just the warm-up act. Halie, Seraphine, keep those eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary. Varrika, stay frosty out there."
Merrin takes a step back from the gate, her mind racing as she tries to figure out their next move. She knows they can't just bust through the ward without knowing what's on the other side. But she also knows they can't afford to waste time either. "Alright, ladies," Merrin says, turning to face the rest of the party. "I've got a plan, but it's going to require some finesse. And a whole lot of luck."
