Round 22 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I step closer to the gate, my holy symbol held ready, silver catching the dim light. The air here feels wrong—heavy, like we're breathing through water. Jeane's tracing those runes, and I can see it in her face: she knows something bad is coming. The magic in this stone isn't just old; it's... alive? Conscious? Varrika's got her mace up—I trust that woman's instinct more than my own gut most days—but even she looks uneasy. Merrin's smart enough to keep those iron tools away from whatever the hell this is. Seraphine's already casting, trying to get a read on what we're dealing with. Good. Knowledge matters more than force right now. I don't like this silence. Whatever's inside... it knows we're here. The footsteps stopped when Jeane tested the gate. It's waiting. Watching. We should document these runes properly before going further. Their magic signature could be crucial later, and I'm not having us stumble into something because nobody bothered to read the damn warnings carved in stone. But part of me knows we need to move. Every moment spent out here is another moment for whatever's inside to prepare. Or for us to lose our nerve. I speak up, voice measured but firm: "Listen. We came here for a reason. But charging blind into a cursed tower because Merrin's got lockpicks and Jeane wants to experiment with her magic is how adventurers end up as skeletons themselves."
I look at each of them in turn, my gaze lingering on Varrika's uneasy grip on her mace. "Let's take an hour. Document the runes, cast some basic protective wards of our own, make sure Merrin knows exactly what to expect when she starts working those locks. I'm not stopping you—I'm asking us to be smart."
Jeane Cromwell stepped closer to the ancient rune-covered gate, her clawed fingers tracing the cold stone. The magic humming beneath it felt wrong—like a wounded heart beating too fast—and she knew instantly this was no ordinary barrier. "The ward is alive," she said softly, not wanting to startle the others but needing them to understand the gravity. "It doesn't want visitors." She glanced back at Merrin and her voice sharpened. "Merrin, put down those tools right now. You'll set off something we can't control."
Seraphine had already started casting a simple detection spell on the gate, which confirmed Jeane's suspicions. This magic was old and sentient in ways she'd never encountered before. The footsteps inside grew louder, slow and deliberate—something massive moving toward them through the darkness beyond that sealed door. Jeane felt her own power thrumming beneath her skin, but this wasn't a situation to test strength against ancient sorcery. She needed to understand the mechanics of the ward before they attempted entry. "Halie's right," she said coolly. "We take an hour. Document those runes thoroughly—every symbol matters. I'm going to trace the magical pathways while Seraphine completes her divination. Merrin, keep your hands away from anything metallic near the gate." She turned to Varrika and nodded approvingly at her position blocking the corridor. "Good instincts."
The demon-blooded sorceress stood there for a long moment, eyes half-closed as she listened to the ward's pulsing magic and the approaching footsteps beyond. Whatever was in that tower... it knew they were here now. And it was coming.
I step back from the gate, putting some distance between myself and those pulsing runes. Jeane's right - no sense in setting off some ancient trap just yet. I slip my lockpicks back into their pouch and cross my arms, eyeing the gate warily. "Alright, I'm on hold mode," I mutter. "But let me know when you're ready for some real lockpicking action. This gate isn't going to pick itself."
The air feels thick with tension and magic, like it might snap at any moment. Whatever's in that tower... it knows we're here now. And I get the feeling it's not happy about visitors. I glance over at Varrika, her heavy mace at the ready. "Stay sharp," I warn. "If anything comes through that gate, we need to be ready to move fast."
Halie's scribbling away at her notes, casting the occasional nervous glance at the runes. I can't blame her - this place gives me the creeps too. But we've come this far, and there's no turning back now. I take a deep breath and try to calm my nerves. Just another day in the life of a rogue, right? Find the lock, pick it, and pray to whatever gods are listening that nothing nasty comes pouring out to greet us. "Okay, I'm ready when you are," I say, cracking my knuckles. "Let's see what secrets this old tower is hiding."
I trace the intricate patterns on the ancient gate with a finger, feeling the cool stone under my touch. The runes hum with a low, ominous vibration.
This isn't just a door. It's a living thing, a ward bound in dark magic older than any of us. Its power is thick in the air, making my skin crawl.
The footsteps beyond are slow, deliberate. Something knows we're here now. And it's coming for us.
I turn to the others, my voice a hushed murmur. "Whatever's inside this tower... it isn't waiting anymore. We need to be ready."
