Round 18 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the party prepares to face the unknown entity, Seraphine casts a simple detection spell against the runes, and the air around them crackles with magical energy. The runes pulse brighter, and Halie's eyes widen as she senses a dark, malevolent presence lurking just beyond the threshold. The Ward's magic reacts to the spell, and the ancient gate begins to shudder. Merrin's tools, still clutched in her hand, emit a faint spark of electricity, and the runes on the gate respond by flashing a warning pattern. The entity within the tower stirs, its footsteps growing louder as it senses the party's presence. The Ward's sentient nature surges forward, its energy coursing through the air like a living thing. The party's morale begins to falter under its intense pressure, and Varrika's grip on her mace tightens as she readies herself for the unknown threat that's about to emerge from the gate.
I approach the ancient rune-covered gate, my demonic wings half-folded against my back, a posture of controlled apprehension. The air here feels wrong—dense with magical residue and something else, something alive in an unnatural way. I trace the patterns on the stone with my gaze alone, careful not to touch anything yet. These aren't mere decorative carvings, I mutter, more for my benefit than for the others who stand tensely behind me. They're a system—a magical circuit designed to defend against precisely what we intend. Look at how they pulse; see that rhythm? This isn't automated decay. Whatever power animates these defenses is aware of us. Halie's faith may be strong, but I don't trust that it will matter here if we blunder into the wrong sequence. The magic in this place feels older than her goddess, colder too—a wounded god trying to hold its insides in with dark sorcery alone. If Merrin starts prodding at these runes with iron tools, we could set off half a dozen defensive spells before we even get inside. Put those down for now, I tell the halfling rogue sharply when she reaches for her lockpicks. Let me verify what kind of trap this is before you start dismantling it like a cheap lock on an inn door. This ward has teeth—magical teeth—and I'd rather not test them with your ironwork. Seraphine, if you're going to cast anything against those runes, make it something simple—just light or minor detection magic. We need to know what kind of defenses we're dealing with before Merrin starts disarming them one by one. Varrika, keep that mace ready but stay back; whatever's inside is already stirring, and I'd rather not face a horde of skeletons while standing ankle-deep in arcane tripwires. I focus my own power, feeling the demonic sorcery coil beneath my skin—ready to unleash flame or shield us with arcane barriers if needed. But first, understanding. That's what will keep us alive more than any amount of hacking and slashing.
I approach the ancient rune-covered gate, my elven eyes straining in the dim light to make out the intricate patterns etched into its surface. A shiver runs down my spine as I feel the dark energy radiating from them.
"These runes... they're not just marks on stone. They're alive in their own way, clinging to existence through sheer magical will." I murmur, my voice a low whisper that is almost lost in the oppressive silence of the Whispering Woods around us.
I reach out a hand, stopping just short of touching the nearest rune, my fingers trembling slightly. The air crackles with an unseen power, a primal fear mingled with an academic thrill.
"The magic here is unlike anything I've ever felt before. It's... it's a wounded god trying to hold its guts in place with dark magic alone." I turn to look at Halie, the human cleric who has been my companion on many such dangerous journeys.
"Halie, can you sense anything? Any divine presence pushing back against this? It would be wise to know if there are forces beyond just our own wits and skills to overcome." My gaze then shifts to Merrin, the halfling rogue who is already reaching for her lockpicks.
"Merrin, put those down for now. I tell the halfling rogue sharply when she reaches for her lockpicks. Seraphine, if you're going to cast anything against those runes, make it something simple—just light or minor detection magic—against those runes." I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what we must do next. "Whatever power animates these defenses is aware of us, and I get the sense that its welcome will be far from warm when we try to pass through."
I set my tools down reluctantly, but I know the elf sorceress is right. Can't risk triggering anything with these iron bits. The magic in this place feels... wrong. Old and hungry. I squint at the runes, trying to make sense of their patterns. They seem to pulse in time with my heartbeat, like they're alive. Whatever's animating them, it knows we're here now. And something tells me it isn't happy about the intrusion. I glance at the tower entrance, straining my ears for any sound of movement. The footsteps seem to have stopped. But that doesn't mean whatever's in there has gone away. If anything, I'd say it's just waiting. Watching. I shift my weight from foot to foot, hand resting on the pommel of my dagger. "Alright, magic hands," I mutter under my breath. "Show us what you've got."
