As the party draws closer to the ancient rune-covered gate, the air thickens with anticipation. The pulsating runes seem to hum with an otherworldly energy, drawing Jeane in with her scholar's fascination. She reaches out a trembling hand to touch the intricate glyphs, and the runes respond by emitting a soft, ethereal glow. The party watches in unison as Elric, the Hermit, steps forward from the shadows, his eyes fixed on the gate with a mixture of wariness and curiosity. "Be cautious, friends," he cautions, his voice low and measured. "The Ward is not to be trifled with. I've studied its patterns, but I fear we may be playing with forces beyond our control."

Merrin's hand tightens on her crowbar, her mind racing with the potential consequences of triggering hidden mechanisms. The slow footsteps approaching the gate grow louder, and the party can sense the unknown entity drawing near, its presence both ominous and intriguing. A sudden gust of wind stirs the leaves, and the runes on the gate flash brighter, casting an eerie light across the surrounding foliage. The air is heavy with anticipation, and the party must decide how to proceed: will they attempt to bypass the Ward's defenses, or risk triggering its deadly mechanisms?

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the geometry of this ward with my eyes alone, careful not to activate anything prematurely. The runes pulse like dying hearts—this thing is alive in its own way, clinging to existence through sheer magical force. Merrin's tools could trigger any number of hidden mechanisms just by approaching wrong. We need to understand these patterns before testing them physically.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air crackles with an ancient, malevolent power as I stand before the rune-covered gate, my eyes tracing the intricate patterns that seem to shift and writhe under my gaze. A shiver runs down my spine, born not of cold but of the sheer wrongness emanating from this place.
I can feel the weight of the party's gaze on my back, their silent questions pressing in like a physical force. Merrin fidgets with her lockpicks, Varrika grips her mace tighter, and Halie mutters a prayer under her breath. Jeane is already lost in arcane analysis, her eyes glazed as she works through the problem in her mind.
But it’s the gate itself that demands my attention. This isn’t just a lock; it’s a living, breathing entity of magic, one that pulses with a dark, hungry energy. It feels sentient, aware of our presence, and deeply, violently opposed to our entry.
"I need to study this," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. I take a step closer, extending a hand palm-up, fingers spread wide in a gesture of non-aggression. The runes flare brighter at my approach, the light casting dancing shadows across the rough stone of the tower wall.
This is dangerous. This is forbidden. And yet, the thrill of it sends a jolt straight through me. To unravel such complex, potent magic… to understand it… it’s why I became an archivist of the arcane in the first place. But I know the risks. One wrong move could unleash something far worse than simple skeletons.
I turn to Jeane, my voice dropping to a near-silent murmur. "Be careful with those runes. They seem… aware. And not in a way that’s likely to help us."
Then, I raise my own hands, beginning the slow, complex gestures of a spell of scrying. If anything, I need to know what we’re dealing with before we even think about breaching this thing.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

We must approach this with reverence, not arrogance. Merrin, put down those tools for now—we don't know what might trigger a more... immediate response. Seraphine, if you can sense arcane defenses, tell us everything. This ward feels like a wounded god trying to hold its insides in. We need careful thought before force.
