Round 7 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I approach the gate slowly, raising my holy symbol. The runes aren't just warnings—they're teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through. Varrika, ready yourself. We might need your strength up front if whatever's inside isn't... kind. Merrin, stop fiddling with those locks until we find a better way. And Jeane—if that ward is as hungry as you say, we should be very careful what we touch and how. Let Seraphine scan for weaknesses first. We need to think this through before we become dinner for whatever's inside.
I stand before the gate, my eyes fixed on the swirling runes etched into its surface. A cold chill runs down my spine as the air grows heavy with an ancient, hungry presence. "This magic... it feels alive. Ravenous." My fingers twitch at my sides, aching to reach for a spell component, but I hold back. Caution is paramount here.
I take a step closer, my voice dropping to a near-silent murmur, meant only for those near me. "The patterns are complex, almost sentient. They're not just warnings—they're teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through."
My gaze darts to Merrin, then to Jeane. I know their skills are vital, but this is different from any threat we've faced before. "Merrin," I say, my tone firm despite my inner turmoil, "stop using those iron tools on the lock until we find another way. And Jeane, be careful what you attempt with your sorcery. This ward... it's looking for us already."
The cold wind howling from the gateway arch sets my teeth on edge. I can practically feel the hunger emanating from those ancient runes as they pulse an ominous blue light. Merrin's lockpicks clink against the mechanism, making me wince. "Stop that," I hiss, glaring at the halfling thief. "You're tempting fate with every turn."
I shift my grip on the heavy mace, feeling its comforting weight. My muscles ache from our trek through the treacherous woods, but adrenaline starts to flow as we near the threshold. I glance back at Halie, standing with her holy symbol raised. "Halie," I say quietly, "if there's undead or worse behind that door, I want you shielded while we take them on."
The runes seem to shimmer and pulse in the dim light, their blue glow casting eerie shadows across the weathered stones. I can practically feel the hunger emanating from them, warning us not to proceed. Halie's right - forcing our way through could be signing our own death warrants.
I recognize what Halie's implying. We don't barge through that doorway and hope for the best—not when those runes are practically screaming that this place wants us dead. I move closer to the gate, my wings tucked close against my back, and trace one of the symbols with a gloved finger while keeping enough distance to pull away fast. These aren't just decorations. The magic here has teeth—literally, it feels like teeth waiting to snap shut. Seraphine's right; this is no simple lock mechanism. It's alive in some way, hungry for intrusion. I step back and consider my options, which are few given our limited magical preparation for such an ancient defense. I turn to Merrin, who's still fiddling with those iron picks despite Halie's warning. "Put the tools away," I say, my voice low but firm. "We're not breaking this seal with cold metal and brute force—that'll set off every defensive spell they've layered in here over centuries." My eyes scan the pattern again, searching for gaps or weaknesses. The sorcery is old beyond imagining, predating even our kind's rise to power. "This ward needs a magical key," I continue, addressing everyone now. "Or we need to disable it without triggering anything. Merrin can probably find hidden catches with her skill—but no forced entry until we understand what the consequences are." I glance at Varikka standing ready with that heavy mace—good positioning, good awareness—and then back to the gate. "Seraphine, can you detect any patterns in the runes? Any gaps or weak spots we might exploit without setting off every defensive spell they've got waiting?" My own magical senses are screaming warnings, but I need specifics. We didn't come this far just to become trophies for some long-dead wizard's guardian magic. I'm mentally alert and apprehensive—I've faced powerful sorcery before, but this feels different. Hungrier.
