The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I extend my senses past the barrier, and what I feel makes my blood run cold—the magic here is old, hungry, alive in a way that shouldn't be possible after all this time. The runes aren't just warnings; they're teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through. These wards are sentient—somehow linked to whatever horrors guard the tower proper. Merrin, I'm telling you not to touch those locks with physical tools until we find a magical key or disable them somehow. Seraphine, can your senses detect any gaps in the barrier? Any weak points we might exploit?

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I approach the gate cautiously with my holy symbol raised, feeling that familiar wrongness of dark magic seeping from the ancient stone. Each rune pulses like a living heartbeat, hungry for fresh prey—us. Merrin, stop fiddling with those locks! Seraphine, can you sense any gaps in this ward we might slip through? Varrika, ready yourself—I don't think prayer alone will be enough to hold back what's waiting beyond that door. [CUE: The runes flare suddenly as Merrin's tool scrapes against them. A cold wind howls from the gateway arch.]

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves as I approach the ancient gate. The runes etched into the stone seem to pulse with an ominous energy, warning me not to touch them. But I know that if we're going to get inside this tower, someone needs to take a closer look at the lock. "Alright everyone," I say quietly, "I'm going to need some space to work here. Halie, Varrika—keep your eyes peeled for any signs of undead or other nasties. Jeane, Seraphine—if you sense anything magical that might cause us trouble, speak up now."

I crouch down in front of the lock mechanism, pulling out my lockpicks with hands that are only slightly unsteady. As I start to work the picks into the keyhole, I feel a sudden rush of cold air across the back of my neck, as if someone—or something—is watching me from behind the gate. "Ugh," I mutter under my breath, "I hate this."
