The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I drop my crossbow and rush to Merrin's side, kneeling beside her. The wound on her leg is unlike any injury I've seen before—it pulses like a second heartbeat, and the flesh around it has gone from reddened to something dark, almost... hungry-looking. The air itself seems to tremble where her blood seeps onto the ground. Whatever this field is, it's feeding on her life force. I look up at Elric, my voice sharp with barely controlled anger. 'You knew more than you said about this place, didn't you? Tell us everything—now. The truth this time.' My hands hover over Merrin's wound, ready to attempt a purifying spell or a healing prayer, but I hesitate. I don't know what this darkness is, and I don't want to make it worse by introducing foreign magic into something I can't identify. I turn to Seraphine for guidance. She may have seen something like this before—or at least understand the mechanics better than a simple cleric who usually deals with bandits and common curses. 'What do you make of it? This isn't natural decay, is it?'

The runes on the gate have started moving subtly—wriggling like worms beneath stone skin—and that unsettling hunger in the air has focused on Merrin. I don't know how to stop absorption without understanding its source.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the ancient runes on the gate with my finger—each symbol feels alive under my touch. They writhe subtly against the stone like trapped creatures yearning for release. Merrin's wound pulses in sync, dark energy bleeding out rhythmically as it’s drawn toward this...thing. Elric. You knew this place wasn't just haunted. I can feel it—the barrier isn't just a lock mechanism. It's hungry. And you've been feeding it stories instead of truths ever since we entered these woods. I turn to face him, my wings folding tight against my back. The leather armor creaks with the motion, and I reach for my mace instinctively before catching myself. We don't need force—I need answers. Now. What is this gate really protecting? What did those dark sorcerers bind here that still feeds on living energy? Because whatever it is, it's trying to pull Merrin inside, and I won't let that happen. I step closer to Elric, my voice dropping to a dangerous purr: Share everything. Everything you've kept hidden about this tower. Or by the hells I crawled out of, I'll find other ways to make you talk—and trust me, they won't be nearly as pleasant for you as this conversation is. The runes on the gate flare briefly at my words, responding somehow to the threat or perhaps savoring the promise of more bloodshed. Either way, time's running out for Merrin. I need to understand what we're dealing with before whatever's inside pulls her apart atom by screaming atom.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I grit my teeth against the searing pain radiating from my leg. The wound pulses in sync with the writhing runes on the gate, as if they're calling to each other. I can feel a dark energy seeping out of me, drawn toward the barrier field like a moth to a flame. "Elric," I gasp, my voice strained. "What the hell is this place? What's happening to me?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I approach the ancient gate, my senses heightened. The air here feels thick with an ancient, predatory energy. As I trace the runes with a single trembling finger, a shiver runs down my spine. They are alive, I can feel it in the thrumming vibration against my skin. This is no mere lock; this is something else entirely.
"The runes," I whisper, my voice so low it's nearly inaudible even to me. "They're... they're hungry."
My eyes dart toward Merrin, who lies on the cold stone ground nearby, her face contorted in pain. A dark stain spreads from the gash on her leg, and I see the wound pulsing in sync with the writhing symbols on the gate. My heart sinks into my stomach as a terrifying realization dawns.
I turn to face Elric, my expression grave. "Elric, we need to act fast. Whatever this barrier field is, it's drawing life force from Merrin. We have to stop it before she's completely drained."
