Narrator · Narrator

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The runes pulse with dark energy, and Merrin's leg is clearly infected—this isn't just a barrier; it's alive in some way. I gesture sharply at Elric. Stay back! Don't come closer to the gate while we assess this. To Seraphine: What do you mean by 'magical energy distortion'? That tells us nothing useful about whether it's hostile or what its purpose is. And Merrin, whatever you did to yourself there, don't move an inch toward that field—it seems to be responding specifically to your wound and whatever dark energy is attached to it. I step closer myself but maintain distance from the rune-covered gate. The cold emanating from the stones feels wrong—dead perhaps, or worse than dead. Whatever this tower once was, it's certainly not holy ground now. I need to consult my own texts, see if there are any wards we can use before approaching something that actively tries to absorb infection into itself. To Halie: I agree—Elric and Seraphine's insight is questionable at best right now. We need to approach this systematically or risk making it worse. Merrin needs immediate attention, but whatever field this is, if it's drawing her darkness in... that suggests a purpose we don't want to fulfill. I draw my silver holy symbol—more as a gesture of intent than any genuine expectation of efficacy against whatever ancient magic holds this place together—but I keep it concealed for now. We need to know more before revealing every card in our hand.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I feel the dark energy seeping from my wound, pulsing in time with the eerie glow of the runes. Panic rises in my throat as I realize this field is more than just a barrier—it's alive, and it's hungry for the corruption inside me. "Elric!" I call out, my voice trembling. "Tell us what you know about this place, now! Before it's too late."

My eyes dart between the hermit and the ominous gate, my hand tightening on the hilt of my dagger. The air is thick with tension, and I can feel the others' unease mirroring my own. "We need to find a way through, or at least figure out what we're dealing with before this thing takes me apart piece by piece." I shift my weight, wincing as pain lances up my leg. "Jeane, Halie—any ideas on how to stop whatever's happening here?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I take a deep breath, my gaze fixed on the shimmering surface of the barrier field. The air here feels thick, heavy with an ancient magic I can almost taste on my tongue. Merrin's cries of pain echo in the silence, a sharp counterpoint to the low hum of the field's power. My mind races, trying to piece together the fragments of forbidden lore I've gathered over years of study.
Elric's warning rings in my ears, but it is Jeane who captures my full attention now. She stands before the gate, her back rigid with tension as she studies the runes. Her voice is calm, controlled, yet there is an undercurrent of command that demands obedience. "Stay back," she says, not looking away from the gate. "Don't come closer to the gate while we assess this."
The words are a clear order, one I have no intention of disobeying. The risk of what might happen if that barrier is crossed without proper understanding is too great. I watch as Jeane gestures towards Merrin's leg, her expression one of grim concern. The dark energy seeping from the wound is unmistakable, a chilling reminder of the dangers we face here.
I feel a chill run down my spine as I recall the texts I pored over back in the city archives. Ancient accounts spoke of towers like these, places where time itself became warped and twisted by dark sorceries. Some claimed they were prisons for forgotten gods, others said they housed artifacts of immense power. But none prepared me for this... this living thing that seems to pulse with malice.
My hand instinctively moves to the heavy tome in my pack, a repository of knowledge I hope will prove useful here. As Jeane continues her examination, I shift closer to Merrin, who is now being held back by Halie. The halfling's face is contorted in pain, sweat beading on her forehead.
I lean down, my voice barely above a whisper. "We're going to get through this," I murmur, trying to project an assurance I don't quite feel. "But we need to be smart about it."
My eyes flick back to the barrier field, then to Jeane. She seems to have some grasp of what's happening here, and her calm demeanor is a welcome anchor in this swirling chaos. If anyone can find a way past this thing, it might be her. But first, we need answers. I turn my attention to Elric.
"Tell us everything you know," I say, my tone leaving no room for hesitation. "About this place. About the barrier. Now."
I straighten up, my posture mirroring Jeane's. We are two sides of the same coin - one driven by instinct and raw power, the other by careful study and ancient wisdom. Together, perhaps, we can unravel the mysteries of this accursed tower before it consumes us all.
