Phase: converging

The air crackles with an otherworldly energy, a malevolent presence coiling around them all. Seraphine takes a slow step back from the gate, her sharp eyes fixed on the runes that pulse like living veins. They writhe against the stone, their meaning becoming clearer by the second. It’s not just a warning—it’s a challenge. *The barrier field shimmers, its surface rippling like water disturbed by an unseen hand. A chill runs down her spine as she watches it, knowing now that it is reacting to something far...
Jeane presses her palm flat against the rune-etched surface of the ancient gate, her crimson eyes narrowing as she tries to read the dark magic thrumming through the stone. The barrier field pulses with a malevolent energy that makes her skin crawl—cold, insistent, alive in a way no stone should be. Merrin's leg has gone from injured to infected with darkness in minutes; whatever touched her isn't casual. It isn't incidental. This is predation. She steps back sharply. "Merrin, stay absolutely still." To Elric: "What do you know about the barrier field and this...thing attached to Merrin? Speak plainly now—every word matters."
Halie moves forward, her mace held ready, and fixes Elric with a glare that could cut through stone. "Speak plainly," she demands, her voice even but unyielding. "What is this barrier field? And what have you truly hidden about Merrin’s injury?" The pulsing runes on the gate feel like cold breath against her skin—not alive, dead perhaps, or worse. She won't let this thing take Merrin without a fight.
Seraphine's eyes narrow as she studies the thrashing tendril beyond their shield. The barrier field begins to pulse in rhythm with the thrashing tendril—feeding it power, keeping it alive and hostile. She focuses on maintaining the shield while watching Halie work. The shadow tendril outside continues its assault, but her magical defenses hold—for now. "Whatever you’re doing," she calls to Halie, "hurry!"
Jeane moves to assist Halie with Merrin, ready to provide support or defend against any new threats that might emerge while the cleric works. "Almost there!" she encourages softly.*
The barrier field beyond their shield begins to pulse in rhythm with the thrashing tendril—feeding it power, keeping it alive and hostile. Seraphine's expression darkens as she realizes the true horror of their situation. This thing isn't just a guardian; it’s part of something much larger. And they've woken it up.
Inside Halie's shield of holy light around Merrin, the dark tendril begins to smoke and sizzle as the divine energy scours it. Merrin cries out in pain but clenches her jaw, enduring the cleansing fire. "It’s...working!" she gasps. "The darkness is burning away!"
Seraphine feels a surge of hope despite the dire circumstances—if they can break the connection between Merrin and the entity, maybe they can turn the tables. "Keep going!" she shouts to Halie.*
The shadow tendril outside the shield suddenly stops its thrashing and goes rigid. A low, rumbling growl emanates from within the gate, growing louder by the second. The air inside Seraphine's magical barrier grows colder, and the very stone of the tower seems to creak in protest.
Jeane feels a chill run down her spine as she helps support Merrin through Halie’s purification. "Something’s changing," she mutters. "Not for the better."
Halie's voice rises in intensity as she channels more divine energy into Merrin's wound. "Almost...there!" The last vestiges of dark energy scream and dissipate, leaving Merrin's leg clean but scorched.
Just as Halie completes her purification, the entire gate structure groans loudly. The barrier field flares with blinding intensity before shattering outward in a wave of pure malevolence. Seraphine’s shield holds against the initial blast, but barely—she staggers under the strain, her face contorted with effort.
From beyond the now-open gate comes a sound like a thousand voices crying out in unison—a deep, resonant roar that shakes the very foundations of the tower. The air inside their shield shimmers and distorts as something massive begins to emerge from the darkness within.
Jeane’s eyes widen in horror as she sees what's coming. "It’s not just a guardian—it’s the whole damn thing!"
Halie spins around, mace raised defensively. "What is that?!" The emerging entity is a writhing mass of shadow and darkness, vaguely humanoid in shape but far larger than any human could be. Its surface pulses with malevolent energy, and eyes like burning coals stare out at them from the swirling gloom.
Seraphine grits her teeth, pouring every ounce of arcane power she possesses into maintaining the shield. "I don’t know!" she shouts back. "But whatever it is, it’s ancient and powerful beyond measure!"
The shadow entity steps fully through the gate, its massive form now visible in all its horrifying glory. It towers over them, easily twice the height of a man, with tendrils of pure darkness whipping around its grotesque silhouette. It raises what might be an arm toward them, and the air crackles with raw magical energy.
Jeane feels her heart pounding in her chest as she assesses their options. "We can’t stay like this—it’ll break through eventually!" She glances at Merrin’s now-cleansed leg, then back to Halie. "Can you fight it?"
Halie shakes her head grimly. "Not like this—not with something that old and powerful." She looks around their makeshift camp, eyes landing on the partially opened gate. "We need to get inside, seal it behind us, and find a way to banish it from within!"
Seraphine nods sharply. "Agreed. But how do we get past it without becoming its next meal?"
A wicked grin spreads across Jeane's face as an idea forms. "I might have something." She reaches into her pack and pulls out a small, intricately carved wooden box—an alchemical smoke bomb she'd prepared for just such an emergency. "This should give us cover for a few seconds. Enough to dart through its legs and into the tower?"
Halie's eyes widen with understanding and apprehension. "That’s either brilliant or suicidal," she mutters, but nods. "Do it—we’ll follow your lead!"
Seraphine feels a surge of admiration for Jeane's quick thinking. "Go on my mark!" she shouts. "I’ll drop the shield just long enough for you to throw that thing and make your run—I’ll cover the rear!"
Jeane nods, already priming the smoke bomb with her arcane energy. "Everyone ready? On three—one...two..." She hurls the device at the ground between them and the monstrous entity. It explodes in a billowing cloud of thick, choking purple smoke that fills the air with acrid fumes.
Seraphine drops the shield just as the smoke erupts, trusting her companions to move fast. "NOW!" she screams, already beginning another spell to provide covering fire if needed.*
Halie doesn't hesitate—she grabs Merrin's good arm and pulls her forward into the smoke, using her body to shield the injured woman. "Stay close!" she hisses as they stumble through the thick purple haze.
Jeane follows right behind them, her wings extended for balance as she half-runs, half-falls through the choking cloud. She can hear the entity roaring in fury behind them, its tendrils whipping through the smoke and missing by inches. "Almost there!" she gasps, lungs burning from the acrid fumes.
Seraphine brings up the rear, her eyes watering from the smoke but her focus unwavering. She raises both hands and unleashes a powerful gust of arcane wind, blowing more smoke forward and hopefully obscuring their pursuer's vision even further. "Faster!" she shouts, feeling something cold and malevolent brush past her shoulder.
They burst through the smoke screen just as they reach the gate opening. Halie hauls Merrin inside with desperate strength, followed immediately by Jeane. Seraphine dives in last, rolling to her feet and slamming the heavy stone door shut behind them with all her might.
The stone panel groans and scrapes against its frame, but finally seals with a resounding boom that echoes through the tower's interior. Heavy silence falls for a moment—then a massive impact shakes the entire structure from outside as the shadow entity throws itself against the barrier they just closed.
Halie slumps against the wall, gasping for breath. "That...was either incredibly stupid or brilliantly executed," she pants, wiping sweat from her forehead. "I'm not sure which."
Jeane slides down to sit on the cold stone floor, her wings folding close as she tries to catch her breath. "Let's go with 'brilliantly executed' and leave it at that," she suggests with a weak grin.
Seraphine leans against the door, feeling the creature's fury vibrating through the stone. "Whatever you say," she manages between ragged breaths. "Now we just need to find a way to actually seal this thing away permanently.*
Merrin pushes herself upright despite her injury, face set with determination. "And hope whatever’s left inside this tower is less angry than what’s outside it," she adds grimly.
The sound of the entity continuing its assault on the outer gate fades gradually as they move deeper into the tower's interior—each echoing thud a reminder of their narrow escape and the dangers yet to come.
