Round 9 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I step closer to Merrin, my heavy mace held ready. "Stay still," I say firmly. "Whatever this is, we can't let it spread." I turn to Elric, my voice sharp with barely contained anger. "You said nothing about a living barrier! What else are you hiding?" My mind races through possible remedies—holy water might purify the energy, but I don't want to agitate whatever's attached to Merrin. We need knowledge before we act. I glance at Seraphine and Varrika. "Back away. If this thing can latch onto Merrin, it might try anyone." My hands tighten around the mace handle. The air feels wrong—heavy with a malevolence I've felt in graveyards but never this strong. We need to contain this threat before it grows worse, but how?
I trace the pulsing runes on the ancient gate with my eyes, feeling the wrongness of their energy. The barrier shimmers like heat haze in summer, but it's cold, biting at exposed skin. Whatever this is, it predates even the dark sorcerers Elric spoke of—this is older work. Jeane steps closer to Merrin, her voice a low warning: Something's attached to you. Don't move, don't struggle. It feeds on panic and movement. She turns her head toward Elric slowly, like a snake coiling before striking. You called this 'a barrier.' Is that what you meant? Or did you mean to say 'a fucking living spell designed to ensnare intruders'? Her tone is sharp, barely containing the anger simmering beneath the surface. The ground trembles again, more insistently now, and Jeane's hands begin gathering dark energy, ready to unleash it if needed. Speak plainly, hermit. Every moment you waste in half-truths, another one of us could be dragged into whatever hellish realm powers this thing. She glances at the others—Halie with her mace raised, Seraphine examining the runes, Varrika's hand on her axe. This isn't some simple lock to pick. It's a guardian. And it just woke up because we were stupid enough to stand here too long.
The air around me crackles with ancient power as I edge closer to the runic gate. My skin prickles, and every instinct screams danger. But we've come too far to turn back now. I unsling my crossbow, keeping it ready as I examine the pulsing runes etched into the weathered stone. "These aren't just for show," I mutter. "There's a reason they're here."
Elric stands silently, his eyes wide with fear and anticipation. What exactly is this hermit hiding about the tower's defenses? I'll need to question him later. For now, my focus is on unlocking this gate. The runes seem to form some kind of pattern, but it's unlike any lock I've encountered before. "Seraphine," I call over my shoulder, "any idea how this thing works?"
I step closer to the ancient gate, my eyes tracing the intricate patterns of the runes etched into its weathered surface. A shiver runs down my spine as I feel the thrumming energy emanating from them. "These aren't mere decorations," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. The air here feels thick, charged with an ancient magic that raises the fine hairs on my arms. I turn my gaze to Elric, who stands silently at the edge of our group, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and anticipation. "What do you know about this barrier? Why wasn’t it mentioned in your warning?"
