Shadow of the Ancients / Run 016 / Main Story
Round 1 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The sun's faint light struggles to pierce the canopy above, casting dappled shadows across the overgrown entrance of the ancient stone tower. The air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Weeds have claimed the gate, wrapping their tendrils around the rusted hinges and ancient runes that seal the entrance. Elric's weathered voice carries on the breeze, his words laced with a mix of warning and curiosity. "Turn back while you still can, travelers. The tower's power is not for the faint of heart. Dark forces stir within its walls, and those who venture in rarely return."
The group stands before the gate, their eyes fixed on Elric, who watches them with a discerning gaze. His bushy eyebrows rise, as if daring them to ignore his words.
I study Elric's face carefully, noting how he shifts his weight back when he speaks to us, hands moving in small gestures that suggest less confidence than his words imply. A bluff? Or genuine warning? Either way, fear is contagious. I catch Varrika eyeing the tower entrance with barely contained hunger and feel a familiar heat rise within me at her boldness. We didn't come all this way to be dissuaded by some old man in tattered robes.
I step forward slowly, my heavy mace clutched in both hands, and address Elric directly. "We appreciate your concern," I say, my voice steady despite the nervousness twisting inside me. "But we have come too far to turn back now." My eyes flick briefly to the tower looming above us—the stone facade seems alive with shadows that writhe in the dappled moonlight filtering through the canopy. "We mean no disrespect, but if this sword truly has the power to save our village, then we must try." I glance around at my companions—Jeane's face shows her usual blend of excitement and calculation, Merrin's expression is unreadable as always, Varrika's grip on her axe looks more like a promise than a prayer, and Seraphine's eyes are already scanning the tower for magical vulnerabilities. "We stay together," I continue, more to myself than anyone else. "We watch each other's backs. And we trust in whatever gods or fates brought us here."
I edge closer to the tower entrance, my eyes darting between the ancient runes on the gate and Elric's weathered face. A shiver runs down my spine as I study the complex symbols, each one promising untold dangers within. "Elric," I call out, my voice barely above a whisper, "what do these runes mean? What kind of magic are we dealing with here?"
My fingers itch to trace the patterns, to decipher their secrets, but I resist the urge. Better to know what we're up against before we step into the unknown. Varrika shifts restlessly at my side, her hand tightening on the hilt of her axe. The dwarf's eyes are alight with a fierce determination, her thirst for adventure and glory clear in every line of her body. I glance at Halie, seeking reassurance from our cleric's steady presence. But even Halie seems shaken by Elric's warning, her lips pressed together tightly as she stares at the tower. As for Jeane and Seraphine, they're lost in their own thoughts, no doubt pondering the magical challenges that lie ahead. We're all feeling the weight of this quest, the knowledge that failure could mean death or worse. But there's no turning back now. We've come too far, sacrificed too much. The Time-Splitting Sword is our only hope, and we'll face whatever horrors lurk within these walls to claim it. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. "Alright then," I say, my voice steady despite the fear churning in my gut. "Let's see what this tower has in store for us."
With a final glance at Elric's grave expression, I turn to the gate, my hands reaching for the locking mechanism. It's time to put my skills to the test and pray to whatever gods might be listening that we survive this folly.
I stand before the ancient gate, its runes glinting in the dappled light filtering through the trees of the Whispering Woods. The air here feels heavy, charged with an energy that prickles against my skin. Elric's warning hangs like a physical presence, a chilling reminder of the unknown dangers that await us inside.
My eyes trace the complex patterns on the gate, each symbol telling a story of magic and power beyond our reckoning. As a scholar of forbidden histories, I have read whispers of this place, but nothing could have prepared me for the overwhelming sense of wrongness that radiates from it now.
"Halie is right," I say, my voice a low murmur, meant only for the ears of those around me. "If this sword truly holds the key to saving our village, we cannot turn back. But Elric's words... they echo a truth I know well. Some powers are prisons wearing crowns. We must tread carefully here."
I draw my robes tighter around myself, a futile gesture against the cold dread settling in my bones. My gaze flicks to Merrin, who is studying the runes with intense focus. She has an uncanny ability to see things others miss; perhaps she can glean some insight into how to proceed.
"The runes... they seem to be a key of some sort," I muse aloud, though I am thinking more to myself than to anyone else. "A puzzle before a lock. Merrin, what do you make of them?"
