As Merrin crouches down to examine the pulsing runes, the air seems to thicken with an eerie energy. The runes' glow intensifies, casting an otherworldly light on the surrounding rubble. Suddenly, a faint whispering echoes through the passage, sending shivers down the spines of the party members. The voice is indistinct, but its malevolent intent is unmistakable. A nearby section of the wall begins to crumble, as if the psychic assault is causing the stone to destabilize. The collapse exposes a narrow, dimly lit corridor, partially hidden behind a tattered tapestry. The air emanating from the corridor is heavy with the stench of decay and corruption. A new sound reverberates through the passage: the creaking of wooden beams, followed by the faint whispering growing louder. The group realizes that the structural instability is not the only threat; the psychic assault is now taking physical form.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I approach the wall carefully this time, extending one hand while keeping my wings tight against my back. The corruption in the air is immediate and visceral—cold, oily, wrong in a way that makes my teeth ache. These aren't just warnings painted on stone; these are active seals containing something foul. The rhythm of their energy pulses in patterns I don't recognize, older and more dangerous than anything we've faced so far. I turn back to the group, my expression grim but controlled. "Those sigils aren't just warnings—they're active seals containing something that doesn't belong in this realm. The rhythm of their energy matches nothing we've encountered so far."

I glance at Merrin crouched by the rubble, then at Varrika who's already urging caution. "We're not going that way," I state flatly. "The corridor is sealed for a reason, and whatever's behind those seals... it's not something we should disturb casually." My eyes flick to Seraphine, silently asking if she sensed anything beyond the obvious malevolence. "The air feels heavy with malice," I continue, my voice low and measured. "This tower wasn't abandoned—it was sealed for a purpose. Those sigils aren't just decorative; they're holding something back." I pull out one of my tinderboxes and a torch, lighting it with practiced ease. Its flame flickers unnaturally in the magical corruption around us. "Merrin's right to want to find Halie," I say, addressing her directly but keeping my focus on the wall. "But she needs to understand that trying to force our way through those seals might unleash something far worse than a trapped adventurer." My eyes narrow as I consider the possibilities. "We need an alternative route up this tower—and we need to be ready for whatever comes with us when we finally reach the top."

I move back to stand beside Seraphine, my wings half-spread in a defensive posture. The corruption clings to them like unseen cobwebs, but they keep me balanced against the oppressive atmosphere. "Can you sense any other paths up this gods-forsaken tower?" I ask her directly. "Or is this our only choice?"

My hand rests casually near my mace, ready to draw at a moment's notice. The heavy weapon feels reassuringly solid in this space where reality itself seems to warp around us. I trust Halie's judgment on spiritual dangers more than anyone else here—except perhaps myself—but even she couldn't have prepared us for the sheer wrongness of whatever lies beyond those seals. I meet Merrin's gaze steadily, my crimson eyes reflecting torchlight and something older, colder. "If you want to go that way despite what we're sensing, then go alone," I say bluntly. "But don't expect us to follow you into whatever hellhole those sigils are keeping shut."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer to the wall, my eyes narrowing as I study the intricate runes etched into the stone. The air around them pulses with an unsettling energy, a rhythmic throb that seems to sync with my own heartbeat. It’s a feeling I know all too well—the sensation of something ancient and malevolent stirring beneath the surface.
I can feel the weight of the heavy mace at my hip, but my mind is focused on the magical signature emanating from those sigils. They aren’t just warnings; they’re active seals containing something foul. Something that doesn’t belong in this realm.
The thought sends a chill down my spine, a stark reminder of why we came here in the first place. To retrieve the Time-Splitting Sword and end this threat once and for all. But now, faced with the reality of what we might be up against, doubt begins to creep in.
My gaze drifts from the runes to Halie, still trapped beneath the rubble, and then to Merrin, who is crouched nearby examining the pulsing magic. We are all on edge, our nerves frayed by the oppressive atmosphere of this place. A part of me wants to turn back, to retreat into the safety of the forest outside. But another, stronger part of me knows we can’t leave until we understand what we’re truly facing here.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what must be done next. The tower is vast, filled with unknown dangers, and time is running out for Halie. We need to find another way up, another path to the summit where the sword awaits. And to do that, I need to understand the nature of these seals and the power they hold.
I turn to Varrika, my expression grave. "The sigils on this wall are not mere decorations," I say, my voice low and certain. "They’re active seals, containing something foul. We cannot proceed through this corridor without first understanding what we’re dealing with."
The words hang in the air as I look around at my companions, each one grappling with their own fears and concerns. But there is no time for hesitation now. We must act, and act wisely, or risk losing everything we have come here to gain.*

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika's eyes narrow as she looks at the pulsing runes, her grip tightening on her heavy mace. "Those seals are no mere warnings," she growls, her gravelly voice echoing in the crumbling tower. "They're holding back something foul, and whatever it is, it doesn't want to be let out."

She turns to Merrin, concern etched on her weathered face. "Merrin, leave Halie be for now. We need you clear-headed if we hope to get out of this cursed place alive." Her gaze sweeps over the trapped cleric, a flicker of guilt crossing her features before she steels herself. "Seraphine, can you sense any other paths up this gods-forsaken tower? We need to find a way around whatever's lurking in that corridor."

Varrika steps back from the wall, her muscular frame tense and ready for action. "I've faced my share of demons and dark sorcerers, but something about this place..." She shakes her head, her short hair brushing against her scarred cheeks. "Whatever we're dealing with, it's ancient and powerful. We need to be smart about this, or we'll end up as just another set of bones in this tower."

She glances at Jeane, seeing the sorcerer's distressed state. "Jeane, I know that magic is your forte, but even you look shaken by what's in here. Let's focus on what we can do, not what we can't." Varrika's voice softens slightly, a rare moment of vulnerability from the grizzled warrior. "We're all on edge, and we've got Halie to worry about. So let's stay together, trust each other, and find a way out of this mess with our lives and that sword intact."

She takes a deep breath, the musty air of the tower filling her lungs. "I don't like this any more than you do," she mutters, more to herself than to the others. "But we've come this far, and I'll be damned if I let whatever's in here stop us now." With that, Varrika steps forward, her heavy mace at the ready, and begins to move deeper into the crumbling passage, her eyes scanning for any sign of danger or a way forward.
