As Merrin catches herself on the railing, the ground shudders again, and the air fills with an acrid smell. A section of the wall nearby begins to crack, revealing a hidden compartment behind a tattered tapestry. The compartment is small, but it contains a leather-bound book and a piece of parchment with a cryptic message scrawled on it:

"Beware the keystone's weight,
Lest darkness claims the light."

The ground gives one final shudder, and the staircase creaks ominously. Merrin's injured knee throbs in protest, and the others exchange worried glances. The air seems to vibrate with malevolent energy, and the flickering torches cast eerie shadows on the walls. The sound of distant chanting grows louder, and the group senses that they are being watched by unseen eyes.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I tighten my grip on the heavy mace, muscles tensing in anticipation. The cryptic message and hidden compartment have my dwarven instincts on high alert. This tower is even more treacherous than we feared. But we didn't come this far to turn back now. Our mission is clear - retrieve that blasted sword and be done with it. And if the dark magic wants a piece of us, well... I've faced my share of foul sorcery before. "Alright, listen up," I say gruffly, turning to face the party. "This place is crawling with evil. I can feel it in my bones. We stick together, watch each other's backs, and don't touch anything we don't have to."

I nod towards the book and parchment. "Jeane, take a look at that message. Maybe it'll give us a clue what fresh hell we're walking into. Halie, keep those healing potions handy - I've got a feeling we'll be needing them."

My eyes drift over to Merrin, still looking a bit shaken from her brush with the crumbling stairs. "You alright there? That was a nasty fall. If your leg gives out again, just holler and I'll carry you over my shoulder if I have to. We're getting that sword, one way or another."

I take a deep breath, the air heavy with the stench of decay. This tower is bad news, but I've faced worse. With luck and some dwarf stubbornness, we might just make it out alive.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The air here is thick with decay and something else—demonic binding magic. I can feel it in my teeth, that wrongness twisting up from below like rotten breath. The sigils on those stairs aren't just warnings; they're containment seals. Whatever's down there, it's bound tight, and breaking those seals could unleash... well. Nothing good. Halie's right about Merrin needing a proper cleaning of her scrape—that filth probably carries half a dozen curses already—but the real problem is that corridor itself. I don't like it. The stones feel wrong, too warm in places, too cold in others. It's like the tower's own flesh is diseased. We need to find another way up. There have to be hidden passageways or secondary entrances around the perimeter—towers like this always have emergency exits for the nobility when things go south. We can circle the base, look for loose bricks, hidden latches. Varrika's right too—this place is crawling with something foul. I don't want us stumbling into a hallway we can't fight our way out of if those sigils start pulsing. Let me check the map again and consult my spellbook. There might be a ward or counter-spell that can at least tell us what kind of demonic magic we're dealing with.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin peers at the crumbling tower, her nose twitching. "Nothing a bit of lock-breaking can't handle," she mutters, but her gut twists. This place reeks of death and dark sorcery. She shakes out her hands, trying to banish the unease. "Alright, let's have a look at that map again." Merrin spreads the tattered parchment on a nearby stone. "If we're going to pick our way up this deathtrap, we need a plan."

She traces the winding staircases with a finger. "I'll take point. My eyes are sharp enough to spot traps, and my hands quick enough to disarm them."

Merrin glances at Halie. "You watch my back. I don't need to tell you how to handle undead horrors." She flashes a tight smile. To Jeane she says, "Keep that magic of yours ready. But for the love of the gods, no binding spells. We don't know what we might be stirring up in here."

Lastly, her gaze falls on Varrika. "You're our muscle. If anything gets past us, you knock it back to whatever hell it crawled out of." Merrin gives a sharp nod, trying to ignore the pain in her knee. She rolls her shoulders, testing her balance. The fall on the stairs still aches, but she'll be damned if she lets it slow her down now. "Questions?"
