Shadow of the Ancients / Run 015 / Main Story
Round 63 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin takes a step back, crossbow at the ready, and scans the shadows for any sign of movement, a faint, unsettling whisper echoes through the corridor, carried on the draft of dust and decay. The air seems to vibrate with malevolent energy, and the ancient runes on the walls pulse with an otherworldly light. Suddenly, a section of the floor ahead of Merrin gives way, plunging into a seemingly bottomless pit. A low, mournful moan resonates from the depths, making the hairs on the back of Merrin's neck stand on end. Immediate pressure: The group must decide how to proceed, as the pit seems to be pulling them in with an unseen force. Will they attempt to cross the remaining floor, or explore the pit and risk being swallowed by the darkness?
The dwarf's eyes narrow, scanning the crumbling tower entrance warily. Her calloused fingers tighten around the haft of her heavy mace. "Alright, listen up," Varrika growls, her gravelly voice cutting through the tense silence. "This place gives me the chills, and not in a good way. The air's thick with something foul, and I don't trust it one bit."
She glances at Merrin, still poking around the pulsing runes. "Merrin, step back from that wall carving. We don't know what it does, but I've got a bad feeling about it."
The dwarf turns to face the rest of the party, her weathered features set in a grim expression. "We need to be smart about this. Halie, keep that holy symbol out front. Jeane, see if you can sense any other magic besides whatever's leaking from those walls. And Merrin..." She sighs. "Try not to set off any more traps, yeah? We're all on edge here."
Varrika's eyes sweep over the treacherous entrance, her battle-hardened instincts screaming danger. "This tower's a death trap waiting to spring. We need to move careful, watch each other's backs, and get in and out quick. That sword's not gonna find itself."
She takes a deep breath, the musty air thick with dread. "Alright then. Halie, lead us in. Keep that light shining bright. The rest of us will follow, ready for anything this hellhole throws at us."
The dwarf steps forward, her mace at the ready, muscles tensed for battle. Her eyes never leave the shadows, watching for any sign of movement. She knows they're about to face something terrible, but Varrika Thornwake has never been one to shy from a fight. She is the shield against the darkness, and she will not falter now, no matter what horrors await them in the depths of this accursed tower.
I feel the wrongness here like a physical weight pressing against my skin—a malevolence that seems to seep through the very stones. This tower isn't just abandoned; something ancient and terrible was bound within these walls, and whatever sealed it away has failed. The magical corruption is thick in this corridor, almost too much for even me to handle. Those containment runes aren't holding—they're fighting against a breaking force from inside. We need to find an alternative route, or at least prepare counter-spells before we proceed further. Merrin, I appreciate your curiosity, but that wall carving pulses with dark energy. Stay back until we can properly assess it. Varrika, you're right to be cautious—this place feels wrong on a fundamental level. Halie's holy symbol might protect us from some spiritual threats, but demonic magic leaves its own scars. We've come too far to turn back now—but that doesn't mean rushing into certain death either. Let me consult my grimoire; there should be protective sigils we can inscribe on our gear before proceeding deeper.
I step between Merrin and the wall carving, raising my silver cross until its light spills across the stonework. "Enough." The wrongness here presses against my skin like a physical weight, bruised reality bleeding through. "We've come too far to turn back now—but that doesn't mean rushing into certain death either." I glance at Jeane. "What do you sense?"
