Round 62 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I step forward, silver cross held high, light flaring against the oppressive gloom. "We've come too far to turn back now," I say softly but firmly, my voice carrying more conviction than I feel. The wrongness here presses against my skin like a physical weight. "But we move with caution. Varrika, Seraphine—what did those runes tell you?" My eyes flick to Merrin's restlessness, sensing her itching to explore before thinking. "Merrin," I add more sharply than intended, "wait for the all-clear." I'm not her guardian, but someone needs to keep this group sane—or at least alive—and right now that's me. The dusty air catches in my throat, and I resist the urge to cough. Instead, I reach for a waterskin, unscrew the cap with deliberate slowness—a small ritual to ground myself against the encroaching dread.
I recognize these sigils—they're containment runes, ancient and powerful, still active despite the tower's decay. Something was imprisoned here, something dangerous enough that they built a fortress around it and layered magic thick as stone to hold it back. We can't just blunder in there like Merrin wants, eyes wide for traps but blind to the magical corruption already seeping through these walls. The pressure Varrika mentioned isn't just our imaginations—the sigils are fighting against something from within, trying to contain a breaking force that wants out. Moving forward without preparation is suicide, especially with Seraphine feeling that wrongness in the runes overhead. We need to assess this corridor's magic before we proceed, and I have counter-spells ready for what might come through those walls once we start disturbing them. And there's no way we're taking the main staircase—not when the sigils are pulsing with dark energy like a heartbeat. We find an alternative route around that section, or we find another entrance to this cursed tower entirely.
Merrin steps forward cautiously, eyes darting from one crumbling stone to another. The air inside is thick with dust and decay. The structure protests their presence, ancient stones groaning beneath their feet. Merrin feels unseen eyes upon her, shudders. "Halie, keep the holy light burning bright," she calls over her shoulder. "I've got a feeling we're going to need all the divine favor we can get in here."
She runs a hand along the wall, feeling for hidden latches or pressure plates. Her fingers brush against something odd - a raised pattern in the stonework that almost seems to pulse with an inner light. "What do you make of this?" she asks, pointing to the strange marking. "Looks like it might be important, but I'm not sure we should be touching anything without knowing what it does first."
Merrin takes a step back, crossbow at the ready. Her eyes scan the shadows for any sign of movement. The hair on the back of her neck prickles, and she has the distinct feeling that something is watching them from the darkness. "Any tricks for getting past whatever's guarding this place?" she asks, keeping her voice low. "I've got a bad feeling about this, but we didn't come all this way just to turn back now."
