Round 57 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Halie finishes purifying the corridor, the pulsing runes on the walls flicker and dim, their malevolent energy waning slightly. The air feels less heavy, but an unsettling silence remains. Suddenly, a faint whisper echoes through the corridor, "Leaving now... will not be needed..." The voice is soft, raspy, and seems to come from all directions at once. A chill runs down Merrin's spine as she senses that whatever presence was nearby has retreated, but the ground beneath her feet still creaks ominously. New Detail: A small, almost imperceptible tremor runs through the stone floor, making the torches on the walls flicker. Immediate Pressure: The party must decide whether to proceed further up the tower, searching for the Time-Splitting Sword, or attempt to secure the ground floor and ensure their safety before ascending.
Varrika grips her mace tightly, heart pounding as she stares at the pulsing runes. "By the ancestors' beards, what in the nine hells was that?" she mutters. "This whole tower's rotten to its core."
She turns to Halie, eyes narrowed with concern. "Cleric, you said you could purify this space? We'd best do it quick before whatever's lurking down there decides to come up for a visit."
Varrika glances at Jeane, noticing the sorcerer's wings still half-spread in a protective stance. "Jeane, any chance you can sense where that hidden stair leads? We need to know if we've got a new back door to worry about."
She takes a deep breath, muscles tense and ready to spring into action at the first sign of trouble. "Merrin, keep your eyes peeled for any more traps. And Merrin, Halie - I don't need to tell you two to be careful. This whole damn place is a deathtrap waiting to happen."
Varrika's gaze darts between her companions, calculating their next move. "So what's our play? Purify the sigils and push on up the tower? Or take the time to secure the ground floor first? I'm all for getting that sword, but not if it means walking into an ambush or getting picked off one by one."
Jeane Cromwell's crimson eyes narrowed as she studied the flickering green runes that pulsed along the walls of the crumbling corridor like diseased veins. The malevolent energy they emanated prickled against her skin—a cold, oily sensation that made even her own dark magic curdle in protest. "There’s more here than just ancient stonework," she said coolly to Halie and Merrin, though her wings twitched involuntarily behind her. "Those sigils aren't mere decorations—they're feeding something far uglier." She glanced toward the darkness where Varrika had tumbled down the hidden staircase, thankful for the sorceress's quick reflexes in grabbing the fighter before she fell further. Jeane’s mind raced through potential counter-spells and protections. Her usual bravado warred with a rare flicker of genuine unease—the kind that suggested even her demonic nature recoiled from whatever lurked within these walls. "We cannot trust this floor," she continued, voice barely above a whisper despite the power usually contained in her tone. "The entire structure feels... wrong."
She turned to Merrin, her expression uncharacteristically serious. "You mentioned other entrances? I need specifics—we must find an alternative route that avoids these sigils entirely." Her fingers tapped against her mace hilt, a nervous gesture she quickly stilled. "Because if we proceed through here, whatever presence Halie sensed might decide it doesn't need to be 'needed' anymore."
Jeane’s crimson gaze flicked between each party member in turn—assessing their readiness, weighing options rapidly behind her carefully schooled expression. The sorceress knew they needed to press onward toward the Time-Splitting Sword, but at what cost? Her instincts screamed caution while duty demanded progress. "Let Halie purify this space," she finally said, voice firm despite her internal conflict. "But we move as soon as she’s done—no lingering, no curiosity satisfied." She met Merrin's eyes directly. "Find us another way up the tower before I change my mind and decide we torch everything below ground level just to be safe."
Jeane knew it was a drastic suggestion—a reckless one by her usual standards—but the pulsing runes seemed to mock her, their light growing brighter as if feeding on her own uncertainty. She hated feeling vulnerable, hated the way these walls pressed in on them like hungry mouths. "Trust me when I say," she added with dangerous softness, "my patience for this place is wearing thin. And you don't want to see what happens when it snaps completely."
Merrin's eyes dart from the flickering runes to Halie, then back to the ominous corridor stretching out before them. The halfling scout takes a deep breath, trying to quell the unease gnawing at her stomach. Her fingers twitch towards her crossbow, but she resists the urge to draw it - not yet, at least. "Alright, listen up," Merrin says, her voice uncharacteristically serious. "We've got two options here. We can either try to secure the ground floor before moving up, or we push forward now and hope Halie's purification holds."
She glances at the cleric, noting the sweat beading on Halie's brow as she focuses on the sigils. Merrin presses her lips together, considering their limited options. "Halie, can you tell if those runes are just a warning or if they're actually doing something nasty? And Varrika - " She turns to the warrior. "Did you see any other entrances when you were scouting the perimeter?"
Halie shakes her head, still concentrating on the pulsing lights. "I'm... I'm not sure. It's like there's a hum in my ears, blocking everything else out."
Varrika shrugs, her grip tightening on her warhammer. "Nothing but rubble and shadows out there. This is our only way in unless we want to try flying."
Jeane lets out a humorless laugh, her wings still half-spread protectively. "Flying would be suicide. Those things in the sky..." She trails off, shuddering. Merrin nods slowly, her mind racing as she weighs their options. The ground floor feels like a trap, but rushing into an unknown upper level could be even worse. "Okay," she says finally, squaring her shoulders. "Halie, do what you can to purify that space. Jeane, keep your eyes peeled for any other sigils or traps. Varrika and I will secure our rear and sides."
She takes a deep breath, steeling herself. "We're going up. But we'll take it slow, and if anything feels off, we pull back immediately. Understood?"
The others nod grimly, and Merrin allows herself a small smile. "Let's see what trouble we can get into, eh? Just try not to step on any more secret switches this time."
With that, the halfling scout turns and leads the way into the corridor, her crossbow at the ready and her eyes scanning every shadow for hidden dangers. The tower looms ahead, its dark secrets waiting to be uncovered - or unleashed upon them.
