Phase: converging

The tower's embrace was cold as stone and heavy with a magic that felt wrong in its very bones. Seraphine descended the crumbling stairs, her breath catching in her throat as the air grew thick with something foul—like old parchment and despair given scent. It clawed at her senses, hungry and desperate, making her skin crawl beneath her robes. The heavy stone door groaned shut behind them with an ominous finality, sealing them inside this waking nightmare.
Jeane followed, her crimson eyes narrowing as she tasted the air. "This place is wrong," she hissed, more to herself than the others. "The magic here... it's starving." Her wings shifted restlessly, leathery and dark against the gloom. The pulsing runes lining the stairs weren't mere decoration—they felt like teeth waiting to close. She raised a hand, tracing sigils in the air that spoke of binding circles and wards against spectral intrusion.
Merrin moved ahead, her halfling senses on high alert. The crossbow felt warm and familiar in her hands as she nocked a bolt, the cold metal a comforting weight against her palm. "This place has teeth," she muttered, eyeing the pulsing runes with suspicion. They seemed to call to her, their edges sharp and hungry. Her fingers itched to investigate further, to peel back the layers of magic and secrets buried here.
The air grew heavier still as they descended deeper into the tower's embrace, each step echoing ominously in the oppressive silence. The walls pulsed faintly with a malevolent rhythm, shadows writhing unnaturally in the corners of their eyes. A section of the stairs gave way beneath Merrin's foot, causing her to stumble and almost fall. The wooden boards beneath creaked dangerously, revealing dark spaces below.
Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine as the stairs shifted underfoot. "Careful," she warned, her voice barely above a whisper. The magic here was ancient beyond measure—and it wanted something. She could feel it like a physical presence, cold and hungry and impossibly patient. Her fingers tightened around the intricate carved key in her pocket, its metal cool against her skin.
Jeane's wings half-spread for balance as she studied the ceiling above. The stone there pulsed with a faint red glow, each beat of light seeming to draw power downwards into the waiting darkness below. Her lips pursed in distaste as she tasted the corruption on the magical currents swirling through the space. "This place... it's wrong," she murmured again, more to herself than the others.
Merrin shifted her weight, crossbow slung across her back pressing against her shoulder blades as she scanned the yawning entranceway with alert eyes. The stonework here was ancient beyond measure, each block covered in strange symbols that seemed to absorb what little light filtered down from above rather than reflecting it back into the gloom. A faint humming sound echoed up from below, vibrating through the soles of their boots—a sound that set teeth on edge and raised the hairs on the back of the neck.
The tower's embrace was cold and hungry, its secrets buried deep within crumbling stone and ancient magic. But the air grew heavier still as they descended deeper into its depths, each step carrying them further from the world above and closer to whatever waited below.
