Shadow of the Ancients / Run 015 / Main Story
Round 48 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the group hesitates on the narrow ledge, a faint creaking echoes from within the tower's depths, causing the stones to shudder and the air to vibrate with malevolent energy. The pulsating runes on the wall seem to be drawing power from the masonry, as if feeding a hunger that threatens to consume the entire structure. A section of the ledge suddenly gives way, sending you tumbling towards the void below. You manage to catch yourself on the rusty railing, but the motion sends you off balance, and your footing falters. The sound of scraping stone and crumbling masonry fills the air as a hidden trap springs shut behind Varrika, sealing her off from the rest of the group. You have 30 seconds before the trap's trigger mechanism resets, reactivating the trap and potentially pinning Varrika in place for good.
I eye the ledge warily, testing my weight against the crumbling stone. The wind whistles ominously through cracks in the masonry, sending shivers down my spine. I glance back at Halie, her eyes wide with apprehension. "This is a fool's errand," I mutter under my breath, more to myself than anyone else. "But what choice do we have?"
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the precarious climb ahead. The alternative - facing whatever horrors lurk within the tower's depths - seems even less appealing. "Alright, love birds," I call out with false cheer, "who's ready to dance along the edge of oblivion? Try not to look down too often, yeah?"
I step onto the ledge, pressing myself flat against the wall as I inch my way along. My heart hammers in my chest, each step sending pebbles skittering into the abyss below. "Halie, keep an eye out behind us," I hiss through clenched teeth. "Last thing we need is a surprise visit from our undead chums."
I risk a glance over my shoulder, meeting Halie's wide-eyed gaze. She nods tightly, crossbow at the ready as she covers our backs. One step at a time, I tell myself, trying to ignore the insistent pulsing of the runes embedded in the wall. Just keep moving forward. There's no turning back now.
I don't like those runes pulsing like that—as if they're breathing. Halie's right about them feeling wrong; I can taste the corruption on my tongue. We go up those stairs, we walk into whatever dark thing made its home there. This tower's been feeding on despair for centuries—I can smell it, thick and oily in the air. The stones themselves are thirsty.
I hesitate at the base of the stairs. The stones themselves feel wrong—pulsing with a hunger that has nothing to do with life. "We can't go up there," I say firmly. "The whole place is... unnatural." My silver cross feels cool against my skin, offering no comfort. Varrika's right: something foul made its home here. The air itself tastes of decay and old magic. We need another way. A service corridor maybe? A forgotten passage in the foundations? Anything but those cursed stairs. I won't lead us to our deaths just because Merrin thinks climbing a wall is less dangerous than ascending a haunted staircase.
