Round 42 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin fumbles with the intricate key, her fingers tracing the etched patterns on its surface before inserting it into a narrow crevice near the tower's entrance. The key turns, and the sound of scraping stone echoes through the air as the mechanism creaks open, revealing a dimly lit chamber beyond. As the door swings open, a faint scent of decay wafts out, mingling with the musty air within. Inside, the room is cramped, with dusty shelves lining the walls, their contents shrouded in cobwebs. A faint hum emanates from a series of crystals scattered across the floor, casting an eerie blue glow over the space. The hum grows louder, and the crystals begin to pulse with an intense, pulsating energy. A narrow stairway, winding upward into darkness, lies at the far end of the room. The air seems to vibrate with anticipation, as if the very presence of the Time-Splitting Sword draws the party closer.
I feel the corruption like a physical weight pressing down on us, those sigils pulsing with malevolent energy. My magic could potentially cleanse this taint, but I fear it might also awaken something far worse—dormant evil always hungers for power, even our own.
Merrin approaches the chamber door cautiously, her halfling eyes darting around for any sign of traps. She holds up the intricate key and hesitates briefly before turning it in the lock with a soft click. The door swings open slowly, revealing a dimly lit room beyond. A faint scent of decay wafts out, making Merrin's nose wrinkle. Her gaze is drawn to the floor where glowing crystals are embedded, pulsing with an intense energy that seems to throb in time with her heartbeat. "Well, this is just peachy," she mutters under her breath, her voice a hushed murmur. "Looks like we've stumbled into the lair of some kinda magic freak."
She takes a tentative step into the room, her mace gripped tightly in one hand. The hum of the crystals grows louder as she moves closer to the narrow stairway at the far end of the chamber. Merrin's mind races, trying to plan their next move. The tower clearly holds dangers, but it also seems to be the only way to reach the Time-Splitting Sword. She glances back at her companions, seeing the same apprehension reflected in their eyes. "Alright, let's see where this rabbit hole goes," Merrin says, trying to keep the nervousness from her voice. "But keep your eyes peeled and your weapons ready. We're walking into something nasty here, I can feel it in my bones."
With a deep breath, she turns back to the stairway and begins to descend, each step echoing ominously in the cavernous space. The air grows colder as they descend, and an unsettling sensation prickles at the back of Merrin's neck, as if unseen eyes are watching their every move. As they round a bend in the stairs, Merrin pauses, holding up a hand to signal the others to stop. Ahead, a faint red glow emanates from around the corner, along with an eerie chanting sound that sends a chill down her spine. "What in the nine hells is that?" she whispers, her heart pounding in her chest. She knows they should turn back, find another way, but the promise of treasure and the urgency of their quest drive her forward. Merrin takes a deep breath and steels herself for whatever horrors await them around the bend.
I stand back from the threshold, my silver cross held up as if it could shield us all from this corruption. "Merrin," I call out softly, voice barely carrying over the strange humming that fills the air, "wait. That feeling—it's not natural. The stones themselves are screaming." I take a step forward, though every instinct screams at me to retreat. "Let me go first. My senses are attuned to this kind of...wrongness. We need to move carefully."
