As Halie's warm glow illuminates the sigils, the air seems to vibrate with an otherworldly energy. The breathing sigils on the walls pulse too slowly, as if they're exhaling a noxious gas that seeps into the air. The figure surrounded by protection in Halie's vision begins to take form, its presence radiating an aura of malevolent intent. The ground beneath Varrika's feet shifts, and the sound of scuttling, unseen creatures echoes through the corridor. The shadows seem to be coalescing into twisted, humanoid forms that move with an unnatural, jerky gait. Merrin's crossbow bolt flies true, striking one of the sigils with a shower of sparks, but the air remains thick with the feeling of malevolence. A faint, pungent scent wafts from the corridor ahead, like decay and rot. The party's torches cast flickering shadows on the walls, making it seem as though the very darkness is moving, twisting around the edges of their vision.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I feel it too—the corruption is like an infection spreading from those walls themselves. We're not dealing with simple undead here; this is something worse. Halie, what do your senses tell you about this magic? And Merrin—if that bolt triggered a trap, then we need to know the rules of engagement before we blunder in further. If you feel darkness watching us, I want to know its shape and purpose. Seraphine, prepare a counter-spell for whatever emerges from those shadows. Varrika, keep your crossbow aimed but don't fire unless we have clear targets—we can't afford to stumble into more traps without understanding the consequences first. I'm not suggesting retreat, merely caution before committing to this corridor. The tower core may be through here, but our lives are worth more than rushing blindly into whatever hell they've constructed in there.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

My stomach twists as the shadows coalesce into twisted forms, the stench of decay overwhelming my senses. I keep my crossbow trained on the nearest creature, finger tense on the trigger. "Alright, listen up," I say, pitching my voice to carry over the skittering and slithering sounds. "We've got undead abominations ahead and who knows what else. Halie, love, you're our eyes in the dark. Tell us what you see."

I glance at Jeane, unease churning in my gut. "And Jeane, keep that demonic magic on a short leash. We don't need any more surprises."

Turning to Seraphine, I jerk my head toward the pulsing sigils. "You're our lore expert. What's the play here? Can we disable those runes or do we need to find another way in?"

My eyes dart between the party members, alert for any sign of danger or dissent. The tower breathes malice, and I'll be damned if I let it swallow us whole. "Varrika," I say, pitching my voice low. "Keep that crossbow ready. If anything moves, you put an arrow in it."

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. This is what we trained for. This is why we risked everything to come here. "Alright, people," I say, squaring my shoulders. "Let's show these abominations what happens when they mess with the wrong halfling."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand at the threshold of the tower, my keen elven eyes scanning the pulsing sigils on the crumbling stone walls with a mixture of fascination and deep-seated dread. The air here is thick with an ancient, malevolent presence, a feeling that chills me to the bone despite the heavy robes I wear.
My mind races as I try to make sense of what we're facing. These aren't simple runes or wards - they feel alive, almost sentient. The way they breathe is unnatural, too slow and deliberate, like they’re exhaling some noxious gas that seeps into the very fabric of reality.
I turn my gaze to Halie, who stands nearby, her holy symbol clutched tightly in her fist. "Halie," I call out, my voice a low murmur meant only for her ears over the thrumming energy of the sigils. "Can you see anything more? Some indication of what kind of magic this is?"
As I ask, a sudden scrabbling sound echoes from the shadows deeper in the corridor, followed by a low, guttural growl that makes my blood run cold. Merrin's crossbow snaps up, her fingers tightening on the trigger. The air grows heavy with tension as we all brace for whatever horror is about to emerge.
My heart pounds against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear and exhilaration. This is what I came here for - to uncover secrets lost to time, to confront the very edges of what magic can achieve. But now, faced with its raw power, all my academic curiosity feels like a child's toy next to a dragon's hoard.
I take a half-step back, my hand instinctively moving to the pouch at my belt where I keep my most potent healing potions. We're going to need them. The question isn't if we'll encounter danger, but how much of it we can survive.
I look around at my companions - Varrika, Merrin, Halie. They are my protection against what lies ahead, my allies in this madness. But even their combined skills and strength feel woefully inadequate against the power emanating from these walls. We're treading in waters that are far deeper than any of us could have imagined.
I turn back to the pulsating sigils, my resolve hardening despite the fear coiling in my gut. This is why we came. To find the Time-Splitting Sword. To unravel the mysteries of this place. And to do that, we have no choice but to go forward, into the heart of this corruption and whatever nightmares it holds.*
