The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

The air in this corridor tastes wrong—'sweet rot' clinging to my throat. Those symbols aren't breathing; they're choking on something ancient and hungry. I step closer, silver cross held forward like a ward against evil. "This isn't undead magic," I say quietly. "These runes feed on despair, extract life force." The walls seem to pulse in response. "We should seal this passage, purify it with fire if we can. Whatever's down there—it doesn't belong in our world." My fingers trace the silver cross, drawing strength from its familiar weight. "Merrin, please—let me handle the interpretation. Your courage is... reckless right now."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I examine the pulsing symbols on the walls. The rhythm is wrong—too slow, too deliberate for simple enchantment. These aren't breathing at all; they're inhaling something we don't even know we're exhaling. I step back slowly from the corridor threshold. If that's demonic magic, we need to find a different route to the sword. Varikka, hold there—let me cast Detect Magic first before anyone goes deeper in.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin peers into the dimly lit corridor, her dark eyes scanning the walls for any signs of traps or wards. The air feels heavy, thick with an unseen pressure that makes it hard to breathe. She can see the pulsing runes etched into the stone, their demonic energy palpable even from a distance. "Those symbols aren't natural," she whispers to Halie. "Demonic magic, dark and hungry...I've never seen anything like it."

Merrin takes a tentative step forward, her crossbow at the ready. The weight of her gear feels heavier than ever, but she knows they can't turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword is too important. She turns to Varrika, who stands ready at the front of the group. "Varikka, you're our best bet for scouting ahead. Take point, but be careful. Whatever's down there...it's watching us."

Merrin's fingers twitch at her side, eager to draw her lockpicks and crowbar. But she knows they'll need her quick hands to disarm any traps they encounter. For now, she holds back, watching and waiting for the others' next move. The halfling rogue can feel the tension mounting in the air. She's used to danger, to the thrill of the unknown. But this...this is different. This is something ancient and hungry, a power that seeks to consume everything it touches. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come. Whatever lies ahead, they'll face it together. They have to. The fate of the world may very well depend on it.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer to the entrance of the shadowed corridor, my eyes fixed on the pulsing breathing symbols carved into the stone. Each rhythmic glint in the torchlight sends a fresh wave of unease down my spine.
This is no simple magic of undead, no mere necromancy. These runes feed on something far more insidious—despair itself, siphoning the life force from those who dare to venture too near. The air grows thick and heavy around me, pressing in like a suffocating weight.
The hermit's words echo in my mind, a chilling warning now made all too real. "Demonic forces dwell within those ancient walls." I can feel their presence now, a malevolent hunger that seems to watch our every move.
I turn to Varrika, who stands at the head of our small group, her mace gripped tight in her hands. Her expression is one of grim determination, but I see the tension in the set of her shoulders, mirroring my own apprehension.
"The symbols... they're inhaling something unknown," I say, my voice low and urgent. "Whatever magic this is, it's not natural. It feels alive."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The dwarf steps forward into the shadowed corridor, mace gripped tight in her scarred hands. The air is thick and suffocating, heavy with an oppressive presence. Varrika's eyes narrow as she scans the pulsing breathing symbols etched into the walls. "This isn't natural," she mutters, her gravel-edged voice barely a whisper. "Those runes... they're feeding on something. Dark magic, and it don't like light."

She takes another tentative step forward, peering into the dimly lit passage ahead. Her battle-hardened instincts scream at her to turn back, but the weight of their quest hangs heavy on her broad shoulders. The Time-Splitting Sword must be retrieved, no matter the cost. "Cleric," Varrika calls over her shoulder, "get up here and tell me what you make of this foulness. The rest of ye—keep your wits about ye. Whatever's down this corridor... it's watching us."
