Narrator · Narrator

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

This tower feels wrong down to my bones. Merrin, wait—those symbols aren't natural magic, they're breathing the air itself dark. Varrika, don't go alone. Jeane, if those things start moving or speaking, we need to know. I'll cover everyone's backs.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I circle the corridor entrance warily, my dark leathery wings tucked close. The air here is wrong—too thick, too heavy, clinging to my skin like a physical weight. Those breathing symbols on the walls pulse with each heartbeat, their magic raw and demonic. If we proceed down this staircase, we'll be walking into the heart of whatever corruption lies ahead. I address Merrin directly: "Wait. Let Varikka scout first—she's nimble and can handle herself if things go sideways. But I need to examine those symbols closer before we all waltz in blind." To Halie: "Your instincts about this place are spot on. That magic isn't natural—I've seen demonic sigils before, and these aren't just decorative."

I crouch near the wall, tracing one of the breathing symbols with a gloved finger while maintaining a spell ready. The stone vibrates faintly under my touch, and I can feel a malevolent presence watching through the magic's eyes. "This is no simple undead lair," I mutter. "Something dark has taken root here—demonic in nature."

I straighten up, turning to face everyone with a grim expression. "We have two options: proceed down these stairs into certain magical corruption, or find an alternative route around the tower's exterior. The latter is risky in its own right—the woods are crawling with things that want to tear us apart—but at least we won't be walking into a den of demonic influence."

I look directly at Merrin and Halie: "If we go down there unprepared, whatever's waiting could latch onto our souls. We need counter-spells ready—specifically against possession and reality warping. And I'm not convinced those stairs are even stable—the masonry feels... off."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin edges closer to the dimly lit corridor, crossbow at the ready. She addresses the party in a hushed tone, her dark eyes scanning the shadows. "The air feels thick with malevolence," she warns, "and those breathing symbols on the walls make my skin crawl. They're not natural, that's for sure."

She turns to Varrika, the halfling scout. "Varikka, you're good at scouting—take point, but be careful." Her gaze shifts to Jeane, the sorcerer. "Jeane, keep an eye on those symbols, see if you can figure out what they do." Finally, she nods to Halie, the cleric. "Halie, watch our backs."

Merrin takes a tentative step into the corridor, her grip tightening on her crossbow. The heavy mace at her belt swings lightly as she moves. "Let's see what secrets this tower holds," she mutters, more to herself than to the others. Her keen halfling eyes dart from side to side, searching for any sign of movement or danger. The weight of her gear pulls at her shoulders, but she ignores the discomfort, focused on the task at hand. As they proceed cautiously into the tower's depths, Merrin can't shake the feeling that something is watching them, waiting. The air seems to grow thicker with each step, the breathing symbols pulsing in time with her racing heart. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever lies ahead. "Stay sharp, everyone," she whispers, her voice barely audible over the ominous silence of the tower. "We don't know what we're walking into, but I get the feeling we're not going to like it."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I peer into the dark corridor, my keen elven eyes straining to make out more than just the faintly glowing symbols on the wall. The air itself seems to hum with an unnatural energy, heavy and cloying in my lungs.
"This magic... it isn't right," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. I take a slow step forward, my hand reaching up to touch one of the pulsating runes carved into the stone.
As my fingers brush against the cold surface, a jolt of dark power courses through me, a tangible thing that makes my teeth ache and my stomach clench. I gasp, yanking my hand back as if scalded.
"It's demonic," I say with absolute certainty, turning to face the others. My gaze falls on Varrika, who stands ready to descend into the unknown depths.
"Varikka, be careful on those stairs," I warn, my voice dropping to a strained whisper. The thought of losing another member of our party to whatever lurks below is almost more than I can bear. "The corruption here is... it's beyond anything we've faced before."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The air here is thick and heavy, clinging to my skin like a physical weight. That magic... it's not right. It feels like it's watching us.
