As Jeane steps cautiously into the hidden corridor, her eyes adjusting to the dim light, the runes etched into the stone walls seem to pulse more rapidly, casting eerie shadows across the group's faces. The air feels heavier, and the symbols appear to shift, rearranging themselves in a pattern that sends a shiver down Merrin's spine. Halie's hand on her shoulder tightens as she senses the darkness emanating from the corridor. Suddenly, a faint whispering begins to echo through the passage, the words indistinguishable but the malevolent intent clear. The runes on the walls flare with an intense light, and the group can see that they have formed a symbol – a crude drawing of a skull with two eyes that seem to watch them from the darkness. The whispers grow louder, more urgent, and the pressure plate in the corridor triggers a hidden mechanism, causing the ground beneath their feet to shift. The group finds themselves facing a narrow, winding staircase leading down into the depths of the tower.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I step forward, my heavy boots echoing off the stone floor. The air in this hidden corridor feels thick, oppressive. It presses against my skin like a suffocating blanket. I tighten my grip on my mace, the worn wood of the handle familiar under my callused palm. "Alright, listen up," I gruff out, my gravelly voice cutting through the tension. "We're not blundering ahead like blind drunkards. Jeane, cast your spell. Merrin, hold your horses. Halie, keep an eye on those runes."

I peer into the darkness ahead, squinting to make out any sign of danger. The whispers are louder here, a constant susurrus that grates against my nerves. I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing up, a primal warning that something is very wrong. "Keep your wits about you," I mutter, more to myself than to the others. "This place... it feels alive. And not in any way I'd want to be acquainted with."

I take a tentative step forward, my mace at the ready. The ground shifts beneath my feet, and I hear a ominous click. Something is happening. I brace myself, every muscle coiled and ready to spring into action. "Stay sharp," I growl. "And for the love of all that's holy, don't touch anything without checking first. We've got a long way to go before we're out of this hellhole."

My heart is pounding in my chest, a steady drumbeat of adrenaline and fear. But there's something else too, a grim determination that settles over me like a favorite cloak. We came here for a reason. And I'll be damned if I let some dark magic and whispers send us scurrying back to the surface with our tails between our legs. So I take another step forward, into the darkness and the danger. Because that's what we dwarves do. We face the horrors head-on, and we don't stop until the job is done. Or until there's nothing left of us but ashes and memories. But those are thoughts for another time. Right now, there's a sword to be found. And a tower full of undead to smash.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I approach the corridor slowly, casting Detect Magic in an intricate pattern that leaves glowing residue on the air like spiderweb threads catching starlight. The symbols on the walls aren't just decorative—they're breathing patterns, pulsing with energy that tastes wrong in my mouth—like ash mixed with something oily and alive. Those aren't ancient markings; they're alive. The whole damn corridor is breathing.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie moved closer to Merrin, her voice low but firm. "Wait. The air feels wrong here—like reality is bruised underneath the surface." She glanced at Jeane, nodding slightly as the sorcerer began casting. "I'll back you up," she said quietly, "but I don't like those symbols. They're breathing patterns, and I've never seen anything like them in any scripture or forbidden text." Her hand rested on Merrin's shoulder, a silent plea to heed caution for once. The wrongness pressed against her skin, making it hard to breathe properly.
