Round 8 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Halie cautiously steps into the corridor, her eyes widen as she notices a series of intricate, glowing runes etched into the stone walls, pulsing with an eerie blue light. The air grows colder, and the whispering echoes seem to coalesce into a faint, raspy voice that speaks in a language none of them can understand. The voice sends shivers down their spines, making Varrika's grip on her mace tighten. Suddenly, the torches flicker wildly, casting eerie shadows on the walls as the ground beneath their feet shifts, causing Merrin to stumble. Jeane swiftly casts a detection spell, revealing a hidden pressure plate in the center of the floor, which was triggered by Merrin's movement. The air is now thick with malevolent energy, making it harder for them to breathe and think clearly. The party must quickly decide how to proceed, as the pressure plate's trigger has set off a countdown timer, counting down from 30 seconds before a hidden trap is triggered.
Merrin steps back from the threshold, eyes darting along the edges of the doorway, searching for any sign of a trigger mechanism or pressure plate. "Alright, alright, hold your horses," she mutters, more to herself than to the others. "Let's not be too hasty now."
She kneels down, running her nimble fingers along the stone floor, feeling for any irregularities or gaps that might indicate a hidden switch or trap. The air is thick with dread, and she can feel the weight of unseen eyes upon her. "Halie, love, I hate to ask," Merrin calls over her shoulder, "but could you give us a bit of that holy glow? Just enough to see by, mind."
She risks a glance up at the archway, noting the intricate patterns etched into the stone. The runes seem to pulse with an otherworldly energy, and she shudders at the thought of what they might unleash. "Right then," she says, standing up and brushing off her hands. "Jeane, darling, if you could do your arcane thing, we might have a chance of spotting any nasty surprises before they surprise us."
Merrin takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come. The tower looms above them, its walls dripping with shadow and malevolence. But there's no turning back now. They've come too far, and the prize is too great. "Alright, you lot," she says, cracking her knuckles. "Let's see what secrets this old ruin is hiding, shall we?"
I can feel it—something ancient and hungry lurking in here. The air itself is wrong, thick with old magic gone rotten. This isn't natural decay; this is deliberate dark work. The runes on those walls? Not just warnings. They're teeth in a trap designed to snap shut. Varrika, hold! Everyone stop where you are—no more steps until we're sure the floor is clear. Merrin, can you spot any pressure plates or triggers from here? Halie, your holy symbol's reacting already. Whatever this is, it doesn't like light or goodness. We need a counter-spell ready but not cast yet—can't give away our hand too soon. And Seraphine, don't just stand there glowing. Tell me what your senses are picking up from that magical residue. This tower was built to keep things in, and now we're walking into its throat. We proceed carefully, or we don't proceed at all.
I feel the air grow thick around me as we step into the hidden corridor, a heavy pressure settling on my shoulders like the gaze of an unseen watcher. The runes glow with an eerie blue light, casting strange shadows across our faces. "The magic here is ancient," I murmur, my voice so low it's nearly inaudible, yet it seems to echo in the confined space. "And not of the kind we were hoping for. This is no simple ward against intruders."
My eyes scan the walls, tracing the complex patterns of the runes, trying to decipher their meaning. Each one seems to pulse with a malevolent intent, as if they are alive and aware of our presence. "Varrika," I call out softly, "have you ever seen anything like this before? These aren't just protective sigils—they seem to be... feeding off something."
I take a cautious step forward, my hand instinctively reaching for the pouch at my belt where I keep my most potent protective charms. The air crackles with energy, raising the fine hairs on my arms. It feels like a physical presence, pressing against me, trying to push me back. "This is dark sorcery," I say, turning to face the party with a grim expression. "Powerful and deeply corrupting. We should be wary of what lies ahead."
