As Halie steps forward, her silver cross at the ready, a faint whispering begins to echo through the corridor, the words indistinguishable but the malevolent intent clear. The skeletons shuffling towards Merrin halt, their empty sockets fixed on the cleric, as if awaiting further instruction. Merrin's torches, extinguished by the darkening shadows, flicker back to life, casting eerie silhouettes on the walls. The air thickens with an unseen presence, making it harder for the party to breathe. The chuckle from earlier grows louder, and a section of the corridor wall begins to shift, revealing a narrow catwalk spanning the chasm below. The catwalk creaks ominously as Varrika takes a step forward, her hand on the hilt of her sword. "Hold fast, we need to keep moving," she warns, her voice barely audible over the whispers. The catwalk sways precariously, and the party must decide how to proceed next.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step forward, my wings folding close against my back. The air here is wrong—heavy with old magic and something else, something darker. These wards aren't meant to keep out simple thieves. They're meant to hold something in. Halie, wait. Let me check for traps first. I reach into my satchel, pulling out a small crystal vial filled with powdered silver and blessed salt. As I sprinkle it along the corridor's threshold, it doesn't react—the magic here is older than I anticipated. We're dealing with dark sorcery that predates even Elric's knowledge. Listen to me—this isn't just undead we're facing. There are wards here designed to bind entities. If those skeletons move again or if anything else emerges from this darkness, we fall back immediately. Merrin, Varrika, cover the flanks. Seraphine, prepare a shield spell behind us. And Halie—if you sense any holy power reacting wrongly in there, pull out immediately. Corrupted divinity is dangerous even for a cleric of your skill.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Merrin take a cautious step into the dark corridor, her crossbow held at the ready, and feel a chill trace its way down my spine. The air itself seems to resist her presence, a palpable malevolence that makes my skin crawl. My eyes dart between the skeletons and the flickering torches, trying to discern some pattern, some clue to the nature of this magic.
As Halie steps forward to join Merrin, I see the silver gleam of her holy symbol catch the dim light. It's a small comfort in this place of shadows. Varrika's warning about the unknown horrors within echoes in my mind, a grim reminder of what we're facing. The tower is a tomb, and the dead have been disturbed.
I turn to Jeane, who is already preparing her arcane senses to detect traps. Her face is a mask of intense concentration, her fingers moving in practiced patterns over pouches of powdered silver and blessed salt. I know she'll find something, but the question is whether we'll be able to disarm it before it activates.
My own hands move to my belt pouch, fingers brushing against the vials of holy water and the scrolls of protective runes. These are the tools of my trade, the safeguards against the darkness that now threatens to swallow us whole. But even they feel flimsy in the face of whatever power lies beyond this threshold.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what is to come. We must push forward, no matter how much our instincts scream at us to turn back. The Time-Splitting Sword awaits, and with it, perhaps, the answers we seek. Or the doom we dread. "Jeane," I call out, my voice steady despite the tremor in my heart, "what do you see? Any signs of immediate danger?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika grips her mace tighter as she steps into the corridor, the weight of her armor creaking with each step. The air is thick and heavy, like a physical presence pressing against her skin. She can feel the dark magic radiating from the walls, an ominous energy that makes the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. "Stay sharp, everyone," she growls, her voice barely audible over the whispers echoing off the stone walls. "We don't know what's lurking in here, but I doubt it's anything friendly."

Varrika's eyes scan the shadows ahead, looking for any signs of movement or threat. She can hear the party members behind her, their breaths ragged and their footsteps hesitant as they follow her lead into the unknown. As they move deeper into the corridor, Varrika feels a sudden chill run down her spine. It's as if the very air around her has become alive, crackling with an unseen energy that sets her teeth on edge. She tightens her grip on her mace, ready to swing at a moment's notice. "We need to keep moving," she says, her voice low and urgent. "The longer we stay in this place, the more dangerous it becomes."

Varrika can feel the party's apprehension behind her, but there's no time to stop now. They have come too far to turn back, and the Time-Splitting Sword is too valuable to leave behind. With a deep breath, Varrika steps forward into the darkness, her mace held high and her eyes fixed on the shadows ahead. She knows that whatever lies waiting for them in this crumbling tower, it will take all of their skill and courage to survive.
